James Gunn Reveals Cut Peacemaker Season 2 Plot For Dead Season 1 Character

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Peacemaker season 2, episode 7.James Gunn reveals that Peacemaker season 2 nearly brought back another dead season 1 character. Multiple versions of dead season 1 characters have appeared in the alternate dimension Christopher Smith/Peacemaker (John Cena) discovered, including his father, Auggie Smith (Robert Patrick), and his brother, Keith Smith (David Denman).

Peacemaker season 2, episode 7 introduces yet another dead character via Earth-2 with Larry Fitzgibbon (Lochlyn Munro), who is a police officer in this dimension. He was also a police officer in season 1, but was killed by a Butterfly that took possession of him.

In the season 2, episode 7 installment of Peacemaker: The Official Podcast, Gunn reveals that he originally wrote a major storyline for Clemson Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji) in Earth-2. This would have seen Murn as an action hero fighting with the resistance group known as the Sons of Liberty.

While the storyline was ultimately scrapped, Gunn emphasized that Earth-2 still exists, so there is still potential to explore more with Earth-2 and its version of Murn. Check out Gunn’s comments below:

I did at one point write a big plotline for Murn . . . where he was a Son of Liberty. He was a hero. Whereas the Murn on our planet was the worst guy in the world before he became a Butterfly, Murn on their planet was the sort of kick-ass Harriet Tubman . . . like a total action hero.

There’s still the future. There’s still an Earth-2. We didn’t blow it up. It still exists.

What This Means For Peacemaker & The DCU

Peacemaker season 2, episode 6’s ending confirms that people of color have been rounded up and episode 7 confirms they are placed in work camps. Meanwhile, Earth-2’s Adrian Chase/Vigilante (Freddie Stroma) is a Son of Liberty, and a group of the revolutionaries were seen being defeated by Peacemaker and his brother in an earlier episode.

Beyond bringing back a fan-favorite character, bringing Murn back could have provided more insight into what life is like for people of color and the Sons of Liberty on Earth-2. This is a valuable perspective that was not included in the episodes, with all the characters of color there having come over from the other dimension.

Gunn does not seem to have any immediate plans to return to Earth-2 and its version of Murn, but his comments indicate that the door has been left open since the dimension and its characters still exist. With so many DCU TV shows and movies on the way, this dimension and the unseen Murn could easily play a role in the future.

Bringing Murn back as a heroic resistance fighter in Earth-2 could have been incredibly satisfying and impactful. For the sake of Peacemaker and the other main characters, though, it may have been for the best that the storyline was cut.

Murn is a significant enough character that he probably would have overshadowed the primary characters and their storylines, and he wouldn’t have worked as a cameo in the way that Larry did. At the same time, with Earth-2 still existing in Peacemaker and the wider DCU, the Sons of Liberty version of Murn returning is still plausible.
