With Joachim Trier’s latest, Sentimental Value, in theaters now, Collider’s Steve Weintraub spoke with star Renate Reinsve about reuniting with the director after their Academy Award-nominated Worst Person in the World.

In the film, Reinsve stars as Nora Borg, a stage actress and daughter of famed film director Gustav Borg, played by Stellan Skarsgård. Amid a family tragedy, Gustav returns home to his two daughters, Nora and her younger sister Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas), after years of estrangement. Gustav presents Nora with his new script, which she turns down without reading, due to their strained relationship. Difficult emotions arise when Gustav casts a Hollywood actress, Rachel Kemp (Elle Fanning), in the part instead.

During their conversation, Reinsve shares how the role of Nora came to be:

“We became really close after Worst Person in the World… So, we knew that we wanted to work together again. We had such a close, really great collaboration, and touring around with the movie, we got to know each other better. He knew me better as an actor and as a person, so I knew he wanted to write something for me. I came to his house, and he explained the movie to me, and I started crying. So, I knew there was something there.”

She goes on to discuss Trier’s extensive rehearsal process that allows the characters and themes to absorb in a “subconscious way.” In addition, Reinsve also jokes about Zoolander crashing her interview and shares with us her favorite films from directors Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, and Stanley Kubrick.
