Jon Stewart's The Daily Show Future Remains Uncertain

Jon Stewart has been the on-and-off face of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show for quite some time. Unfortunately for the beloved late-night host and his fans, his future with the popular program might be nearing its end.

Stewart first joined The Daily Show in 1999 and left in 2015. However, he returned in February 2024 for the presidential elections, hosting on Monday nights. Shortly after, his contract got extended to December 2025. Although he has expressed interest in staying and assured fans that he’s not going anywhere, nothing has been finalized at the time of this article’s publication when it comes to renewing his contract.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, David Remnick, an editor from The New Yorker, asked him if he would be open to signing another contract with The Daily Show. The comedian responded by saying, “We’re working on staying.” He also stated that if it were entirely up to him, he would continue to host the show.

The conversation with Remnick took a more political turn after Jimmy Kimmel’s brief suspension was brought up. The editor recalled Stewart saying that he wasn’t going anywhere after many late-night hosts were worried about their job stability. Stewart shared that while he was being “neurotic” when he said that, he still planned to fight for free speech regardless of whether they decide to keep him or not. “You don’t compromise on what you do, and you do it until they tell you to leave.

Stewart also further elaborated about the process behind The Daily Show episode that criticized President Donald Trump and Disney for pulling Kimmel off the air.

I think it rattled everyone to some extent, but it also presented great opportunity, and so I don’t know that we’ve had as much fun as we did that Thursday morning, coming up with all the stupid little s*** that you see, including, like, gold pictures and red ties. You know, it gave us some purpose.

The Daily Show airs new episodes Mondays through Thursdays every week at 11:00 PM ET and 8:00 PM ET on Comedy Central, and extended episodes can be streamed on Paramount+.
