Keanu Reeves Drops the First 'Constantine' Sequel Update in Months After Fears of James Gunn's DCU Derailing It

It’s been nearly 20 years since Keanu Reeves first played John Constantine, but fans may finally have reason to believe the exorcist could return sooner rather than later. The sequel, first announced back in 2022, has been developing at a glacial pace. Francis Lawrence, who directed the 2005 original, is set to return, but script concerns have slowed progress, but Reeves has given new comments which mark the first positive momentum in months, offering hope that Warner Bros. Discovery may finally move the project closer to greenlight.

In a new interview, Reeves gave a rare and encouraging update on the status of Constantine 2, saying:

“Fingers crossed. Another draft of the script came in. We’re waiting. We’re gonna take it to the studio and hopefully they like it too.”

What Can We Expect From ‘Constantine 2’?

Earlier this year, Reeves’ co-star Peter Stormare — who memorably played a white-suited, bloody-footed Lucifer in the original film — shed light on why the delays may be happening. He suggested Reeves himself hasn’t been entirely satisfied with the script and made it clear what both he and Reeves don’t want from the sequel:

“I think he wants to do his character again, Constantine, as grounded as it was in the first one. It took a long time for you to become a cult movie, it really worked, and it will work on the audience again. You don’t have to add a lot of action and shootouts. You have other movies. Don’t turn it into big Marvel… [Don’t turn it] into us flying around in harnesses all the time and shooting each other up. Don’t bring in the big guns. Let it be.”

When it debuted in 2005, Constantine earned mixed reviews, landing at just 46% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. Audiences, however, embraced it more warmly, giving it a 72% score and eventually elevating it to cult classic status. Its moody visuals, grisly demon sequences, and unforgettable trip to Hell cemented its place in the genre, while the performances from Reeves, Shia LaBoeuf, Rachel Weisz, Tilda Swinton, Djimon Hounsou, and Stormare earned huge and lasting praise from fans and critics too.

That enduring fan love is precisely why Warner Bros. announced the sequel after David Zaslav’s regime took over. In an era of studio shake-ups and franchise reassessments, Constantine 2 remains one of the most anticipated titles in the pipeline. Stay tuned to Collider for more on Constantine 2.
