KPop Demon Hunters Sequel Poised to Surpass Netflix Records

The animated fantasy sensation KPop Demon Hunters devoured the charts in 2025 and continues to climb Netflix’s streaming records. Produced by Sony, the musical follows the K-pop girl band, Huntrix, as they live secret lives as demon hunters. Things go awry when their rival K-pop boy band, Saja Boys, happen to be demons.

There are a multitude of reasons why KPop Demon Hunters has seen so much success since its release in June 2025. Based on recent data, it has been announced that KPop Demon Hunters is officially Netflix’s most-watched movie, and it broke the viewership record in a landslide.

Based on the ongoing success, it’s no surprise that Kpop Demon Hunters 2 is in the works. The streaming service is working hard on taking parts of what made KPop Demon Hunters such a sensation and piecing together what needs to be added to the second movie.

KPop Demon Hunters was released on Netflix in June 2025 and quickly climbed the Top 10 list. According to Netflix, the animated movie became the “most-watched title over a six-month period with 482M views.” If that wasn’t impressive enough, the lyrical video that Netflix created garnered over 32 million views.

To put the impressive stats in perspective, KPop Demon Hunters’ worldwide viewership over its first three months of release was 325 million views. Next up is Red Notice, which had 230 million views in that same time period, via Tudum.

The soundtrack for KPop Demon Hunters also achieved global success, in addition to having the highest debut among soundtracks on Billboard’s charts in 2025. Over six months after its initial release, KPop Demon Hunters is still on Netflix’s Top 10 list on the US and worldwide charts, as reported by FlixPatrol.

Only KPop Demon Hunters 2 Can Beat KPop Demon Hunters

Because of KPop Demon Hunters’ success, a second movie was inevitable. In January 2026, Netflix revealed that a sequel was in development, but fans shouldn’t expect it any time soon.

KPop Demon Hunters is tentatively set to be released in 2029, but not much has been revealed about the sequel. However, creator Maggie Kang clarified to BBC (via E! Online) that the goal for the KPop Demon Hunters sequel is to be another animated project, as opposed to a rumored live-action:

“There’s so many elements of the tone and the comedy that are so suited for animation. It’s really hard to imagine these characters in a live-action world. It would feel too grounded. So totally [live-action] wouldn’t work for me.”

Co-Director Chris Appelhans went on to say that there are a lot of ways they can expand on the characters in a second movie, but regardless of the direction they take the sequel, the storytelling has to be done right.

Because of how well the first movie did, it’s impossible to think of another series or movie that could surpass it outside its own sequel. A continuation of its core characters, mixed with more chart-topping hits, will make the second movie just as famous as the first.

Organic Hits Like KPop Demon Hunters Are Not Easy To Find

In a world where entertainment is everywhere, it’s hard to find an organic sensation like KPop Demon Hunters, especially with streaming platforms. Mainstream platforms look for promising data before greenlighting projects, which could be in the form of sequels or franchises. Diving into an organic animated movie without any fandom backing was a risk, but it worked.

The epic soundtrack that corresponded with KPop Demon Hunters helped considerably with the marketing of the movie. Those who never saw the movie but heard the songs were more inclined to watch the movie because of how good the songs were.

KPop Demon Hunters broke down barriers and reinvented a modern way to tell and market a story. By adding K-pop popularity, an amazing soundtrack, colorful animation, and fantasy, Netflix came up with a winning recipe.
