Liam Neeson Comedy Reboot Hits Box Office Milestone in Under 1 Month

The Naked Gun has passed a major box office milestone. The movie acts as both a legacy sequel to and a reboot of the Naked Gun trilogy, which starred Leslie Nielsen as the wacky cop Frank Drebin, a character he originated in the parody series Police Squad!. Liam Neeson stars in the new movie as his son, Frank Drebin Jr.

The Naked Gun release kicked off on August 1, with an opening weekend of $16.8 million seeing it debut at No. 3 on the domestic box office chart behind The Bad Guys 2 and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Although it dropped to No. 7 by the time of its third weekend, it has continued to climb the charts in the meantime.

Per The Numbers, The Naked Gun has now reached a cumulative worldwide box office total of $75.5 million, shortly ahead of its fourth weekend in theaters. This is composed of the $44.6 million that it has earned at the domestic box office and an additional $30.9 million from international markets.

This total makes The Naked Gun the 32nd movie of 2025 to pass the $75 million global milestone and only the third live-action comedy to do so, after its fellow legacy sequels Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy ($140.3 million) and Freakier Friday ($91.6 million).

What This Means For The Naked Gun

One hurdle for 2025’s The Naked Gun is the fact that it comes with a reported budget of $42 million. Although its exact break-even point is unknown, movies often need to earn back two and a half times their budgets in theaters, which could place its estimated break-even point as high as $105 million.

This means that there is a possibility that the movie will not turn a profit in theaters by the end of its run. However, its box office performance as compared to other contemporary comedies (the next highest-grossing live-action comedies of the year are Materialists with $70.4 million and One of Them Days with $51.9 million) is still a good sign.

There is a robust audience for comedy on VOD and streaming, which is why there have been fewer theatrical comedies in recent years. Therefore, that audience should help make up for a great deal of any deficit that the Liam Neeson movie may have by the time it leaves theaters.

While The Naked Gun being an all-out success may have been a more concrete sign that the theatrical comedy is being revived, it is still having a remarkable run. In fact, it is by far the highest-grossing Liam Neeson movie of the 2020s, having more than doubled the $32.6 million gross of 2020’s Honest Thief.
