Maggie Lawson Reveals Why Sarah’s Boston Blue Proposal Scene Was The Most Emotional Day On Set

Procedural series star Maggie Lawson has revealed why Sarah’s proposal scene was the most emotional day on set, and what it means for her future. During the events of Boston Blue season 1, episode 15, Seth (Mike Vogel) proposes to Sarah (Lawson) during the 80th birthday party of Reverend Edwin Peters (Ernie Hudson). He uses a ring given to him by Mae (Gloria Reuben), Sarah’s stepmother.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley, Lawson explained just how emotional Sarah’s proposal was while filming the Boston Blue episode. She explained how Sarah’s connection with Mae makes the proposal all the more emotionally satisfying, while also detailing the reactions from the cast and crew when the big event finally happened:

Liam Crowley: I know that there’s an emotional connection with the ring and all that, so you can feel free to speak transparently about that.

Maggie Lawson: Big time. I didn’t really have a connection to a mother figure until Mae came along. I think for Sarah, her whole life was, pretty much until Mae and Lena came along, her whole life was her dad. I think since he has passed, her entire world has turned upside down. As we know with grief, it shows up in weird ways. And I feel like the way that we played out this moment where she does get the ring that Ben gave Mae.

When Sarah gets engaged, it was literally one of the most emotional days we had on set, not just as the characters, but as a cast. It was really powerful for all of us. Everyone was in tears. And that moment when I look down at the ring and I see what ring it is, I can’t even talk about it right now. It hits so hard. And so much had happened in all of our lives too in real life. Actually, my dad had passed the year before, so there was a lot on that day that we were all really emotional about, really caring, and then to have our characters and have it be written the way that it was. Mike is so beautiful in that moment, and so genuine. And I care for him.

I love him so much. In real life, he’s just a wonderful person. Matia, who plays Phoebe over the course of this season, even the day we met, we were like, “Oh my God, I love you.” I love her so much also in real life. So to have this beautiful moment between our characters become such an important moment for us just as a cast was really powerful. I’m glad you asked about it. That was a day. That was an emotional day for us.

As Lawson details, Mae and Lena (Sonequa Martin-Green) are the closest connections she has following her father’s passing. This makes Seth giving her Mae’s ring during his proposal a deeper meaning, emphasizing the closeness of Boston Blue‘s core family and how, no matter what happens, they’ll always be there for one another.

Sarah and Seth have maintained a smooth relationship throughout Boston Blue. This proposal has been a long time coming, and with the event having such a strong connection to Sarah and her family members, with Mae at the center, it makes the moment all the more emotional for the series. It also sets up a wedding for the semi-near future.

Of course, while Sarah’s proposal was a happy moment for the show, it was balanced out by an emotional farewell. Detective Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) is finding it more difficult to keep a strong, long-distance relationship with Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg), as her life in New York City has gotten incredibly busy to maintain while keeping their spark alive.

The proposal, while a happy moment for Sarah, is also where Danny and Baez’s relationship finally fractures. Outside Peters’ party, she confides in Danny that her mother has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, which will make their long-distance relationship more difficult. After a conversation about their future, they hug, tears in their eyes, as the unknown looms over them.

While the proposal marks a potential end for Danny, it’s clear from Lawson’s statement that Sarah’s happiness will still be a core focus of the show moving forward. Although it’s unclear how fast her wedding with Seth will happen, realistically, it’s something Boston Blue season 2 may cover, thus laying the groundwork for even more emotional storytelling moving forward.

As for Boston Blue season 1, there are five episodes left before the season comes to a close, with CBS having already renewed the show for their 2026-27 programming year. Sarah’s proposal is but the start for her, the importance of Mae’s ring and her relationship with Seth ultimately determining what happens next as the series continues telling her story.

For now, it seems like Boston Blue has plenty more to explore with Sarah as she prepares for the wedding that’s going to happen soon. It also means the show has everything it needs to continue making the series’ emotional focus on the Silver family all the stronger, as she prepares for a future with Seth built off her family’s strong bond.
