The Hulk’s status in Avengers: Doomsday gets a definitive answer from star Mark Ruffalo. Bruce Banner has been with the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the first year of the franchise, though Edward Norton was the first actor to give life to the Hulk in the MCU’s movie timeline. Still, after debuting in 2012’s The Avengers, Ruffalo has become the face of the character.
The actor is set to return to the franchise in a huge way, starring in one of the MCU’s 2026 movies. Ruffalo, alongside names like Jon Bernthal and Sadie Sink, joins Tom Holland in the cast of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. However, despite Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, and Robert Downey Jr. appearing in Avengers: Doomsday, the actor has not been confirmed for the Avengers movie.
Now, speaking to Empire, Mark Ruffalo has revealed that the Hulk will not appear in Avengers: Doomsday. That said, Ruffalo is open to coming back as the character after Spider-Man: Brand New Day, saying, “As long as they keep finding cool things to do with Hulk.” Whether that happens in Avengers: Secret Wars or elsewhere remains to be seen.

“As long as they keep finding cool things to do with Hulk. It’s given me so many gifts. You know, I probably wouldn’t be in Crime 101 if it wasn’t for The Avengers.”
Marvel has released the first four teasers for Avengers: Doomsday. The first of them revealed that Chris Evans was coming back as Steve Rogers. The second teaser showed Chris Hemsworth’s Thor with his adoptive daughter, Love. The third teaser was the biggest yet, showing the first look at the return of Fox’s X-Men. The fourth teaser united the Wakandans and the Fantastic Four.
With the MCU’s focus on Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel and Sony have yet to release the first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. However, set photos from the MCU’s next Spider-Man movie confirmed the reports that Ruffalo would return as the Hulk in the film. Bruce Banner could be seen on a stretcher, seemingly injured or confused after Hulking out.
While Ruffalo claims the Hulk is not in Avengers: Doomsday, the actor could be lying to keep his appearance in the movie a secret. After all, Marvel stars have been known for doing so in the past. Just last year, Chris Evans told ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley that he would not be returning in Avengers: Doomsday. However, Evans’ Captain America was in the movie’s first teaser.
That said, Marvel has not announced the return of Spider-Man and the Punisher, two heroes who appear with the Hulk in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, for Avengers: Doomsday. As such, if Ruffalo’s Hulk is truly not in Avengers: Doomsday, there is a chance that Bruce Banner could appear a year later in Avengers: Secret Wars, which will reboot the MCU in some form.
