Marvel Is Officially Redeeming X-Men 97's Most Tragic Hero

Few Marvel moments hit harder than the death of Gambit in X-Men ‘97. After all, his explosive last stand on Genosha left Rogue and fans alike completely devastated. Even so, another corner of Marvel’s multiverse is set to offer Remy LeBeau a second chance.

Unlike the upcoming X-Men ’97 Season 2 which will likely bring Gambit back as one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen, a newer Marvel project is primed to give Gambit true happiness with Rogue, reuniting not only the two characters (but also their X-Men ’97 voice actors).

Gambit’s Death Was One Of X-Men 97’s Most Brutal Moments

Ambushed by Bastion’s Prime Sentinel during the devastating attack on Genosha, Gambit used the last of his strength to overload his powers, sacrificing himself to save Rogue and what few remaining mutant survivors there were in one of the show’s most unforgettably tragic sequences. Just like Rogue, X-Men fans were left completely heartbroken.

Gambit’s death and truly epic sacrifice also reminded fans why he’s such a beloved and popular character. As such, it’s no wonder why he’s set to be the next playable character to be added in Marvel Rivals. Likewise, the hit game is set to achieve what X-Men ‘97 couldn’t: bringing Rogue and Gambit back together for a long-overdue celebration of love.

Marvel Rivals Is Making It Up With Rogue & Gambit’s Wedding

As seen in the new trailer for Marvel Rivals Season 5, the newest chapter releasing later this week centers primarily on Rogue and Gambit’s wedding, only for their celebration to be inexplicably interrupted by Taneleer Tivan’s The Collector, who seems to be stealing Rogue’s wedding wing (a tease for a future Marvel Rivals map set in his vast collection).

It’s a rather lighthearted and fun premise, though one that carries solid emotional weight for fans still mourning Gambit’s animated fate in X-Men ’97, especially with the reveal that Marvel Rivals is also set to reunite X-Men ‘97’ voice stars A.J. LoCascio (Gambit) and Lenore Zann (Rogue).

Both characters will eventually join the game’s already impressive roster this season, as part of the new chapter’s ongoing narrative centered around their interrupted nuptials. After the heartbreak of X-Men ‘97 and Remy’s demise, Marvel Rivals is remarkably giving fans the chance to see Rogue and Gambit finally get the love story they’ve long deserved.

Marvel Rivals Season 5 begins November 14th, 2025. X-Men ’97 Season 2 is expected to begin streaming on Disney+ in 2026.
