If a movie stars the trio of Matt Damon, Andor‘s Diego Luna, and the iconic Jodie Foster, then you know it’s going to be worth a watch. This is the central trio of stars in Neill Blomkamp‘s 2013 sci-fi flick, Elysium. Popular at the time of its release, Elysium has since fallen under the radar of many, especially considering the more high-profile releases in Damon’s filmography that have subsequently debuted, such as his surprise Academy Awards hit The Martian and his part in the ensemble of Christopher Nolan‘s masterpiece, Oppenheimer.
If you’re one of those who have either forgotten or perhaps never come across Elysium, then you’re in luck. The film, written and directed by Blomkamp, is officially joining the slate of new arrivals on Starz in the U.S., arriving September 1. Other such titles to join the streamer this September include The Man With the Iron Fists starring Russell Crowe, Cillian Murphy‘s psychological thriller Red Eye, the era-defining comedy Superbad, Penny Marshall‘s sports classic A League of Their Own, and much more. For those yet to see Elysium, below is a look at the movie’s synopsis:
“In the year 2154, the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. A man takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds. The year is 2154, and the division between social classes has grown wider than ever before.“
Was ‘Elysium’ a Critical Hit?
Despite its impressive central trio and the talent of its writer/director, Elysium was met with mixed reviews upon arrival. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a respectable 64% rating from critics and just 58% from audiences. However, this didn’t stop millions from flocking to their local theaters to catch the sci-fi movie, with its global box office total standing at an impressive $286 million, split between a domestic haul of $93 million and a further $193 million from overseas markets. Critic Ben Kenigsberg neatly summarized the movie’s good and bad, writing, “In a summer of antiseptic effects spectacles, Elysium stands out for its grime and intensity, as well as the bluntness of its class allegory,” before adding, “The movie won’t win many points for originality or logic.”
Matt Damon’s sci-fi flick Elysium is joining streaming site Starz on September 1. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for the latest streaming stories.
