Matt Damon has a long history of collaborations with Ben Affleck, but two years ago, he teamed up with his brother Casey Affleck for a critically panned crime thriller that’s getting a second chance on streaming. Damon and Affleck star alongside Hong Chau and Jack Harlow in The Instigators, a crime thriller following two robbers who must hide out with the help of their therapist after a job goes wrong. The Instigators is streaming exclusively on Apple TV, where it’s been since its premiere, and the film has even snuck back into the global top 10 over the last few days.
The Instigators was a straight-to-streaming release for Apple TV, and while the film did play in a few select theaters, it didn’t earn much at the box office. It also earned poor scores of 41% from critics and 55% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the more unremarkable releases of Damon’s career. The Instigators also marked a reunion between stars Matt Damon and Hong Chau, who previously worked together in 2017 on Downsizing, the dystopian sci-fi thriller that also stars Christoph Waltz. Their earlier work is streaming for free on Pluto TV.
The Instigators was also a reunion for star Matt Damon and director Doug Liman, who made waves in the early 2000s with their work on The Bourne Identity (2002). Liman is also famous for his work directing Edge of Tomorrow, the Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt-led sci-fi film that still has fans begging for a sequel. He even recently worked on Jake Gyllenhaal’s Road House reboot at Prime Video, but after being replaced as director for the sequel, he’s decided to make his own version of Road House 2.
‘The Instigators’ Director Doug Liman Is Reuniting With Tom Cruise Soon
Doug Liman and Tom Cruise will reunite soon for Deeper, an underwater thriller that co-stars Ana de Armas. After working together on Edge of Tomorrow in 2014, Liman and Cruise teamed up a few years later for the true crime thriller, American Made, but Cruise has only worked with Joseph Kosinski and Christopher McQuarrie in the years since. There have been rumors that Liman and Cruise are working on a movie that will be the first in history to film in outer space, but updates about the project have been few and far between.
