M3GAN 2.0 expands the world of the dangerous android that took over the box office some time ago. If the sequel turns out to be successful enough for Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, fans could see the return of the character in the near future, thanks to a third film. Alison Williams stars as Gemma in these stories. The talented actress is also a producer for the movies, meaning that she has some creative control over the property. During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Williams explained how she already has ideas for a potential M3GAN 3.0:
“We don’t want to presume anything, but I would say a lot [of forethought]. (Laughs.) That’s all I’m going to say. We love to dream; that’s why we’re all in this business. We have big aspirations of big dreams, and I certainly don’t feel like I’m done making these movies with these people and this tonal landscape and the subject matter. So, yeah, I have been dreaming of a third, for sure.”
M3GAN 2.0 will pick up some time after the events of the first movie. The titular android (played by Amie Donald) will now serve as a protector to both Gemma and Cady (Violet McGraw). Everything will look peaceful for the unconventional family, but when a new dangerous robot attempts to take over the market, M3GAN will have to do whatever it takes to protect the ones she cares about. The campy tone that turned M3GAN into a massive success will be back in the upcoming sequel.
While M3GAN won’t hold back when it’s time to stand up against AMELIA (Ivanna Sakhno), MEGAN 2.0 has received a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association due to “strong violent content, bloody images, some strong language, sexual material and brief drug references”. The rating will allow teenagers who are fans of the first movie to witness what’s next for M3GAN and her family. Will the android stop AMELIA before it’s too late? Audiences are about to find out.
Who Directed ‘M3GAN 2.0’?
Gerard Johnstone, the filmmaker who directed the first M3GAN movie, returned to take care of the sequel. Unlike the first installment of the franchise, Johnstone wrote the screenplay for the second part. The introduction of AMELIA will allow the series to dive deep into concepts that weren’t explored in the first movie. If M3GAN 2.0 becomes a success at the global box office this summer, there’s no telling what the character will do next.
The cast of M3GAN 2.0 will feature Brian Jordan Alvarez as Cole, Jen Van Epps as Tess, and Aristotle Athari as an undisclosed character. The sequel is a testament to how Blumhouse is quick to action when it comes to producing sequels to their biggest hits. The next installments of The Black Phone and Five Nights at Freddy’s are also in development at the studio, bringing the studio closer to what could turn out to be their biggest year at the global box office.
M3GAN 2.0 is in theaters now. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
