'Modern Family' and 'SNL' Stars See Fairy Tales Come to Life in 'The Sisters Grimm' Trailer [Exclusive]

It’s time to meet the descendants of the legendary Brothers Grimm. Collider is excited to share the official trailer for Apple TV+’s new animated show, The Sisters Grimm, an adaptation of the New York Times bestselling series of children’s fantasy novels by Michael Buckley. The series follows the titular orphaned siblings, played by Modern Family star Ariel Winter and Kindergarten: The Musical alum Leah Newman, as they begin their new lives in the town of Ferryport Landing alongside their grandmother (Laraine Newman). They soon learn of their heritage, the fairy tale folk that live among them, and their duty as members of the Grimm family to keep the magical beings in check. However, as the footage shows, other, more sinister mysteries await in their fantastical new home.

The trailer opens with Sabrina (Winter) and Daphne (Newman) arriving at Ferryport Landing for the first time and meeting their grandmother, Relda. Seemingly everything about the little town is idyllic, with Relda explaining how the locale has become a haven for the Everafters, a magical race of people and creatures ripped out of stories by the Brothers Grimm. In reality, the storytellers were actually investigators who tracked and documented the Everafters and gave them their home in the landing, and it’s now up to the sisters to follow in their footsteps and navigate their fairy-tale world. With help from Relda, they’ll also be on the lookout for clues about their parents’ disappearance. Sabrina and Daphne haven’t seen them since the night their car was found uninhabited with red handprints all over, but Relda believes the incident may be connected to whoever summoned a giant to terrorize the landing.

Between the intrigue, the footage sets up an adventure for the whole family, filled with whimsical characters, danger, discovery, and magic. The trio of Sabrina, Daphne, and Relda, alongside the trickster fairy boy Puck (Billy Harris), must face heroes and villains alike in their journey to solve the town’s mysteries. If the first book, The Fairy-Tale Detectives, is any indication, the sisters will be primarily concerned with the rampaging giants this time around, all while learning important lessons and establishing themselves as a dynamic detective duo. Buckley, who also serves as an executive producer, attested to how the show captures the fantastical energy of his books perfectly. He told Collider:

“There are few times when the tv or film adaptation of a book captures the magic, heart and hilarity of the source material, so I really can’t wait for fans to experience what we’ve been working on all this time. It’s every bit as funny, exciting, heartbreaking and surprising as the books, brought to life by brilliant animators, writers, and a cast of people I truly admire. Families are really going to love this magic carpet ride.”

Who Else Is Behind ‘The Sisters Grimm’?

Also joining Winter, Leah Newman, and SNL alum Laraine Newman is a talented supporting cast, including BAFTA-nominated Raised By Wolves star Abubakar Salim and How to Train Your Dragon live-action actor Harry Tevaldwyn. On the creative end, the series boasts a magical team led by Emmy nominee Amy Higgins (Star vs. the Forces of Evil), who both served as showrunner and developed the series with Sofia the First writer Erica Rothschild. Rounding out the production is the animation studio Titmouse, a regular collaborator at Apple TV+, working on other children’s novel adaptations like the delightful Frog and Toad. With their powers combined, they hope to make The Sisters Grimm a perfectly fantastical watch for all ages during the spooky season. Higgins expressed her excitement for viewers to see the final product, adding:

“It’s been such an honor to take this beloved series from book to screen, and I worked hard to be its best steward. At its core, this is a story about surrounding yourself with excellent people—who may be wildly different from what we know–and trusting them to ride with us on the bumpy journey of life. The experience of working with this team echoes that theme. Some kind of magic happened when we came together, from the producers to the writers to the animators, director and cast. And it shows. I mean, this cast! I’m giddy every time I think of it.”

The Sisters Grimm premieres on Friday, October 3, on Apple TV+. Check out the trailer in the player above.
