Monarch's Show Just Had One Of The Monsterverse's Greatest Moments Yet

Warning: Spoilers for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 10

Summary

  • Monarch: Legacy of Monsters pulls off impressive accomplishments despite limitations on monster action.
  • The show delivers a thrilling fight scene between Godzilla and the Ion Dragon.
  • The epic battle sets a promising precedent for future seasons, ensuring monster action will continue to be a key element.

The Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 1 finale just gave the Monsterverse one of its greatest moments to date. Given its status as a TV series, it was understood that despite the inclusion of giant-sized creatures, Apple TV+’s Monsterverse show wouldn’t be able to make heavy use of monster action in the same that way Godzilla and Kong’s big-budget blockbuster films have been able to do over the years. But in the face of these limitations, the show still pulled off some impressive accomplishments.

Admittedly, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters wasn’t a series where monsters were running rampant or destroying cities like what one would expect from the standard Godzilla fare. Rather, it provided a story more focused on the experiences of humans living in a world where giant monsters are an ever-present threat. Titans made appearances, of course, but only sporadically, and not in every episode. For the most part, Godzilla’s role almost felt like cameos stretched across the series. Even so, Monarch’s show didn’t disappoint with its approach to action.

Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters’ Titan Battle Is Among The Monsterverse’s Best Scenes

The Ion Dragon from Monarch: Legacy of Monsters

Unsurprisingly, the majority of the most talked-about scenes in Monsterverse history involve fights, whether it be Godzilla blasting atomic breath down the female MUTO’s throat, unlocking his burning form and killing Ghidorah, or Godzilla’s heated fights with Kong. Joining that list is Godzilla’s fight with the Ion Dragon, which delivers on every expectation of a Godzilla fight. It’s short, but lasts long enough to provide a thrilling fight scene, complete with Godzilla’s iconic atomic breath attack, his trademark savagery, and a valiant effort put up by the opponent.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters carefully tread the line between Godzilla struggling and dominating. As the King of the Monsters, it was important that the scene highlight Godzilla’s physical superiority. Naturally, doing that can be challenging when trying to create an intense action sequence. Yet, the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season finale found success in doing both; Godzilla was briefly taken aback by the acidic goo spat in his face, but in true Godzilla fashion, he recovered quickly and overpowered the Ion Dragon. And while he didn’t appear to kill the monster, his final blow – tearing off its wing and tossing it into a portal – amounts to a great finishing move for Godzilla, another longtime staple of the Godzilla franchise.

Monarch’s Monster Fight Sets A Promising Precedent For Future Seasons

The decision to end Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 1 with an epic battle between Godzilla and the Monsterverse’s Ion Dragon set a promising precedent for future seasons of the series. There’s been a monster fight to end every Monsterverse installment so far, and the finale sends the message that Apple TV+’s show will be no exception. It may be a show about its human heroes, but it clearly understands that monster action is important too. It’s now safe to say that if it happens, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 should offer a monster fight or two of its own, possibly with Kong getting his share of the spotlight this time.
