The new Prime Video action-comedy Playdate is behaving both like a Kevin James vehicle and something starring Alan Ritchson. It’s seeing the sort of viewership success that the Reacher star is accustomed to on the streamer, despite the kind of poor critical reception that James usually sees. Playdate took the number one spot on the Prime Video charts immediately after its debut last week, and that’s where it remained over the weekend, pushing every title in the hit Culpables trilogy and the recent Sydney Sweeney movie Eden down the leader board.
While it continues to face direct competition from Dwayne Johnson‘s Red One, which is continuing to rise up the ranks as the holidays near, not to mention the recent Mark Wahlberg-led action-comedy Play Dirty, Playdate is holding strong at the top of the Prime Video charts. The movie features James and Ritchson as two dads who agree to spend time together for the sake of their sons. Directed by Luke Greenfield, Playdate opened to terrible reviews and is now sitting at an 18% score on the aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. In his review, Collider’s Shawn Van Horn praised Ritchson’s surprising comedic chops and wrote, “Playdate doesn’t break any new ground, or even try to, but Ritchson, the badass hero on Reacher, is absolutely hilarious with what he has to work with.”
The Survival Drama ‘Eden’ Is Staying Afloat
Ritchson recently headlined the third season of Reacher, while fielding rumors that he’s going to play Batman in the DC Universe. As he broadens his horizons beyond the action genre, his co-star James, on the other hand, has been experimenting as well. Best known for his comedic roles, James has done a couple of action movies in recent years. Meanwhile, the survival drama Eden continues to redeem itself on streaming after a disastrous theatrical run that saw it gross around $2 million against a reported budget of $50 million. The movie jumped into the top half of Prime Video’s global charts last week, softening the blow Sweeney might have felt with her fourth flop in a row at the box office, Christy.
You can watch both Playdate and Eden at home, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
