Nashville Trailer Reveals That Don Is Blue's Father

Just when you thought you understood the dynamics in 9-1-1: Nashville, the trailer comes and changes everything. Before ABC released the informative teaser, we knew that Don Hart is Station 113’s captain, Ryan is his son, Blythe is his wife, and that Dixie is Blue’s mother. We were also aware that Blythe and Dixie don’t like one another very much.

However, the 9-1-1: Nashville trailer proved that there is a lot more than meets the eye when it comes to relationships in the ABC procedural drama TV series. In fact, one huge family secret is seemingly what kick-starts the 9-1-1 spinoff’s story. As a result, this shocking reveal completely reframes 9-1-1: Nashville and its overarching plot.

As it turns out, Hunter McVey’s 9-1-1: Nashville character, Blue, doesn’t start the show as a firefighter. The trailer reveals that he’s working as a stripper, dressed like a firefighter, when a bachelorette group gets into a crash. Blue rushes onto the scene to help before Station 113 arrives. It’s there that we (and Ryan) learn that Blue is Don’s son.

Ryan is advocating for Blue to Don, praising him for his natural talent as a first responder. However, Don only looks at Blue in complete shock. Chris O’Donnell’s character then explains that Blue is his son, making him Ryan’s half-brother. As for why Ryan never met or knew about Blue, fans must tune in to the 9-1-1: Nashville premiere to learn more details.

The 9-1-1 Spinoff Is Fully Leaning Into Its Soap Opera Characteristics

The tension between Dixie and Blythe in 9-1-1: Nashville makes sense now. Blythe’s husband is the father of Dixie’s son, and LeAnn Rimes’ villainous characteristics certainly don’t help them keep the peace between their two families. Blythe seemingly doesn’t trust Dixie, and she has a good reason not to.

In the trailer, it sounds like Dixie forces her son to act as her mole. She tells him, “Go into that firehouse tomorrow and start sinking your hooks into them.” Dixie promises Blue that if he “gets in” with the wealthy Hart family, he will be “set for life.” So, Blue seemingly accepts a job at Station 113 for not-so-pure reasons.

Blue’s role as a double agent and his connection to the Harts change everything we previously thought about the ABC procedural drama TV show. It certainly makes the dynamics at the fire station awkward. Ryan has to consistently see the half-brother he never knew he had. Meanwhile, Don will not have one, but two of his sons working under him at Station 113.

Ultimately, the second 9-1-1 spinoff feels much more like a familial drama (with soap opera characteristics) than it did before. It’s going to completely separate itself from 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star in that regard. And Blue is, surprisingly, at the center of it all in 9-1-1: Nashville.

9-1-1: Nashville‘s pilot arrives on Thursday, October 9, at 9 pm ET on ABC, following the premiere of 9-1-1 season 9 at 8 pm ET.
