NBC Officially Confirms Major Change to Network’s Biggest ‘The Pitt’ Competitor

With the releases of new shows like The Pitt, the medical drama has never been more back in the zeitgeist than it is in 2026. Even other long-running medical procedurals like Grey’s Anatomy are now more than 20 seasons strong with no signs of slowing down, and almost every network has a “doctor show” to hang its hat on. One of the most popular medical dramas that’s been off the air for a while now was ER, which starred The Pitt’s Noah Wyle. There was even a lawsuit at one point alleging that The Pitt was nothing more than a repackaged ER sequel.
