Netflix Cancels The Waterfront After One Season

This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.

Netflix’s Ozark replacement show has been canceled after season 1. The crime drama series starring Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, and Julia Garner ran for four seasons from 2017-2022 and is still considered to be one of Netflix’s most binge-worthy shows.

Since Ozark ended in 2022, Netflix and fans of the show have been searching for a new original series that could be a worthy successor. While no true replacement emerged in 2023 or 2024, a new show released on the streaming platform in 2025 seemed like it might be the answer, although it has now been brought to a premature end.

The Waterfront has now been canceled. The Netflix crime drama was helmed by Scream creator Kevin Williamson and came to the streaming platform on June 19. The Waterfront‘s cast included Holt McCallany as Harlan Buckley, Jake Weary as Cane Buckley, Melissa Benoist as Bree Buckley, Mario Bello as Belle Buckley, and Topher Grace as Grady.

Critical and general audience reviews for The Waterfront were mixed, with a 68% Tomatometer score and 66% Popcornmeter score. However, the series was a streaming hit and spent five weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10 chart for an English-language show, including three consecutive weeks in the top spot, and 11.6 million views after its first full week of being released.

Deadline now reports that Netflix has decided not to move forward with season 2. Williamson has reportedly already informed the cast and crew of Netflix’s decision.

Our Take On The Waterfront’s Cancellation

The Waterfront has now become yet another Netflix show canceled too soon after only a single season. From purely a business standpoint, Netflix’s decision not to renew is somewhat surprising given the show’s streaming success. Many shows, including some they have renewed, have not spent five weeks in the Top 10, let alone three straight weeks at the top.

Other shows that debuted in 2025 on Netflix, including Pulse and The Residence, did not spend as many weeks in the Top 10 and were never at the top of the list, which made their respective cancellations less surprising. However, Ransom Canyon only had four weeks in the Top 10 and peaked at the second spot, yet it did get a second season.

After Netflix’s frustrating decision, The Waterfront‘s burning questions about the Buckley family and their criminal empire have been left unanswered. Netflix will also need to find a new Ozark replacement since it has cut this one short prematurely.
