That moment when you find out a favorite show is leaving the platform has got to be one of the worst feelings for any Netflix fan. You’re scrolling through the “Recently Added” or “Continue Watching” section, expecting your comfort series to be right there waiting for you, only to see those dreaded words: “Leaving soon.”
But unfortunately, that’s how it goes sometimes. When Netflix acquires a licensed title, it doesn’t own it forever. It’s more like borrowing it for a while. These shows are part of temporary agreements, and when those contracts expire, Netflix has to say goodbye, even if fans aren’t ready to. It’s all part of the complicated world of streaming rights and distribution deals, but that doesn’t make it any easier for the people who’ve built emotional connections to those stories.
Sadly, that’s exactly what’s happening as we approach the end of the year. Netflix is about to lose one of television’s most beloved comedy staples, and there’s no telling if or when it will return.
How I Met Your Mother is set to leave Netflix in December 2025

Unfortunately, this is true. We would like to say that we’re joking, but there’s no punchline here. How I Met Your Mother, aka one of the most iconic comedies of the 2000s, is officially set to leave Netflix this December. The streaming giant hasn’t made a big announcement, which isn’t surprising because it rarely does. However, it has put up an official removal notice on the show’s title page on the platform.
The complete How I Met Your Mother series will be departing Netflix on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2025. This means the last day to watch all nine seasons on the platform is Dec. 2. The departure date might seem far away from now, but it’ll be December before you know it. That said, fans still have time to plan a proper farewell binge.
Why not take a walk down memory lane and revisit the moments that made you laugh until you cried, the heartfelt confessions that tugged at your emotions, and the countless quotable lines that became part of your daily life?
Carter Bays and Craig Thomas created How I Met Your Mother. It aired on CBS from 2005 to 2014, running for nine seasons and a total of 208 episodes. That’s pretty impressive, considering the show managed to stay fresh, funny, and emotionally resonant over nearly a decade of television.
The plot revolves around a man named Ted Mosby as he narrates to his children the lengthy and often convoluted story of how he eventually met their mother. Along the way, viewers follow Ted’s adventures and misadventures in love, his career struggles, and the lives of his close-knit group of friends. Josh Radnor stars in the leading role of Ted. Also included in the cast are Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan, Cristin Milioti, and others.
