THE MITCHELLS VS. THE MACHINES

Netflix might be more known for its live-action hits, but the streaming giant has quietly built an impressive track record in animation as well. And we’re talking about before KPop Demon Hunters dropped, because we all know how massive that movie has been!

Let’s take a trip down memory lane to 2021. That was the year The Mitchells vs. the Machines took audiences by storm, introducing us to the chaotic, lovable Mitchell family and their epic fight against a robot apocalypse. Ambitious filmmaker Katie was chasing her dreams, while her overprotective and often hilariously clueless dad, Rick, tried to hold the family together. Meanwhile, little brother Aaron’s boundless energy kept everyone on their toes.

Following the movie’s release in July 2021, Netflix announced The Mitchells vs. the Machines had become the platform’s most-viewed animated title, with an astonishing 53 million households tuning in during its first 28 days. It was even nominated for an Oscar. Due to its success, talks of a potential sequel begin surfacing.

In November 2021, director and co-writer Michael Rianda hinted in an interview with Fandango that he already had ideas for a sequel and revealed that there were people excited about the possibility of continuing the Mitchells’ story. But nothing ever materialized. Fast-forward to now, and Netflix has officially announced a sequel!

The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2 is officially happening at Netflix

THE MITCHELLS VS. THE MACHINES – (L-R) Abbi Jacobson as “Katie Mitchell”, Maya Rudolph as “Linda Mitchell”, Danny McBride as “Rick Mitchell”, Doug the Pug as “Monchi”, Mike Rianda as “Aaron Mitchell”, Fred Armisen as “Deborahbot 5000,” and Beck Bennett as “Eric” | Sony Pictures Animation/Netflix

This is not a joke. It’s really true! Netflix announced a sequel to The Mitchells vs. The Machines on its official X page on Oct. 22. Most of the team from the first movie is returning, including key producers and creative minds. Sony Pictures Animation and Lord Miller Productions, which produced the original film, are back at the helm. According to Variety, Guillermo Martinez, who served as head of story on the first film, will make his directorial debut on the sequel alongside JP Sans (The Bad Guys 2).

Wendy and Lizzie Molyneux, aka the Molyneux sisters, are writing the script. They’re both known for their work on other animated projects such as Bob’s Burgers and The Great North. In fact, they co-created The Great North, so I’d say the sequel is in good hands. Additionally, production on The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2 is reportedly expected to start sometime early next year. However, no plot details or casting information were revealed.

Honestly, the news of a sequel is the best news ever. I don’t think I’ve ever loved an animated family quite like the Mitchells. When the first movie came out in 2021, it hit in a way that felt unexpected and fresh. Watching Katie’s endless energy and determination to make her filmmaking dreams a reality, while her dad Rick stumbled trying to keep up, reminded me of my own family in all its chaos and love.

There’s something so comforting and exhilarating about a movie that can make you laugh uncontrollably at one moment and feel genuinely moved the next, and that’s exactly what The Mitchells vs. the Machines did. Now that a sequel has officially been confirmed, we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop on everything. So, stay tuned to Netflix Life!
