Since 2023, the time-traveling series The Way Home, which aired on the Hallmark Channel and Hallmark+, has been gripping viewers. And while the show definitely earned a dedicated fandom, it never received the praise and fame it truly deserved. Luckily, that’s all about to change. On October 1, the series, starring Andie MacDowell and Grey’s Anatomy alum Chyler Leigh, landed on Netflix, and it’s already climbing the charts.
What Is ‘The Way Home’ About?
The Way Home starts off with mom of one and struggling journalist Kat Landry (Leigh) as she moves back to her small hometown of Port Haven with her daughter, Alice (Sadie Laflamme-Snow). When she arrives, in addition to adjusting to her new life, she also needs to make amends with her mom, Del (MacDowell). After all, when Kat left her hometown to attend college in Minneapolis, their mother-daughter relationship became strained, and it hasn’t been the same since.
Most importantly, Alice begins a whole new adventure in the very first episode when she falls into the Landry pond, only to be rescued by her own mom when she was a teenager (Alex Hook) in 1999. There, in addition to becoming instant best friends with teenage Kat, she also meets her late grandfather Colton (Jefferson Brown) for the very first time, as well as her uncle, Jacob (Remy Smith), who went missing when he was just nine years old. From then on, Alice (and later other members of the Landry family) begin a time-traveling journey where they reconnect with lost loved ones, try to stop their untimely fates, and come to terms with some of the mistakes and regrets of the past. The Way Home also stars Evan Williams, David Webster, Spencer Macpherson, James Gallanders, Kris Holden-Ried, Tim Post, and more.
‘The Way Home’ Goes Beyond a Traditional Time-Travel Series
From the very beginning, it’s clear that The Way Home is far from a sci-fi series about the science of time-travel. In fact, the series uses the time-traveling pond as a vehicle for its female characters to reconnect, bond, and work through their issues. With Alice getting to know her mom as a teenager, for example, she sees the grief and loss her mom has gone through in her life, and why she’s made the decisions that have brought them to where they are now. With time, that allows them to grow closer together and rely on each other, both in the past and in the present.
Plus, by keeping these three female protagonists and their relationships at the center, the show perfectly blends mystery with heart. Sure, there are gripping twists and unbelievable cliffhangers in each episode, but the show also shines in moments where time-travel and the Landry mysteries are nowhere to be seen. Kat’s will-they-won’t-they romance with her longtime best friend Elliot (Williams), for example, is one of the fans’ most beloved storylines in Season 1.
With the perfect balance of mysterious and heartwarming moments, The Way Home has gripped viewers and made them root for their favorite characters for many years now. Now, Netflix subscribers can do the same, and stream their time-traveling adventures in Seasons 1 and 2. Season 3, which premiered earlier this year in January 2025, will be reaching the platform in February 2026. By then, viewers will surely be hooked on the Landry drama.
