One of Apple TV‘s most anticipated sci-fi adaptations just got an incredible update, which fans of the book will absolutely love.
Apple TV has been dominating the sci-fi genre for quite some time now. While it has had a few misses, like Invasion and Hello Tomorrow!, the streaming service has been the home of some of the most compelling and ambitious science fiction shows, like Severance, Silo, Dark Matter, For All Mankind, and Murderbot.
As impressive as Apple TV’s current sci-fi catalog may seem, the streaming service is only getting started. It has an impressive line-up of many exciting new releases and returning installments in the genre. Interestingly, one of Apple TV’s most ambitious sci-fi shows to date also recently got a fascinating update, which makes it even more hype worthy.
Neuromancer’s Author, William Gibson, Has Been Actively Involved With Apple TV’s Adaptation
Callum Turner was cast to play the leading character, Case, in Apple TV’s Neuromancer. In an interview with ScreenRant, Turner opened up about the show’s production and dropped some intriguing details about how it is being approached. Turner also assured book fans that Neuromancer‘s original author, William Gibson, has been actively involved with the show’s production.
As Turner confirmed, they have been giving a lot of value to the author’s input because no one understands the original book’s story better than him. “We had William Gibson a part of the process, and it’s his book. It’s his vision,” he said. This is incredible news because TV adaptations often take way too many creative liberties and end up shedding everything that made their source material great.
William Gibson’s direct involvement with the series ensures that it will not drift too far away from the book and closely adapt everything from its character beats to sci-fi concepts.
Gibson’s Involvement With Neuromancer Continues A Great Apple TV Trend
Time and again, Apple TV has proven that its success with science fiction can primarily be attributed to its ability to honor the books it adapts while making them perfectly suitable for the television storytelling format. Silo has taken quite a few creative liberties since season 1, but it has always stayed true to Hugh Howey’s vision. Hugh Howey has also given his own stamp of approval to the Apple TV series, highlighting how no changes in the show have been forced or unnecessary.
Adaptations like Foundation, Murderbot, and Sunny have done something similar by closely adapting key concepts and character threads from the original books while introducing creative changes that effectively enhance the story. Dark Matter even had the original book’s author, Blake Crouch, as its showrunner, which ensured the show was an upgrade of the book’s ideas in more ways than one.
With William Gibson’s involvement, Apple TV‘s Neuromancer is now treading the same path, setting up a solid example of how sci-fi book adaptations should be approached.
