One of the Greatest Action Movies of the Decade Is Driving Off Netflix Soon

Director Edgar Wright might be dealing with the unexpected underperformance of his latest film, The Running Man, but this means that Baby Driver will remain the biggest hit of his career, at least for some time longer. Released in 2017 to near-universal acclaim, the film made a killing at the box office. But its legacy has been unfortunately tarnished in the years since its release, mainly due to scandals involving a couple of prominent cast members — Ansel Elgort and Kevin Spacey. Nonetheless, Baby Driver is a rip-roaring action film, often listed among the best that the genre has seen in the last decade. But it’s set to leave its streaming home, Netflix, at the end of the month.

Baby Driver follows the adventures of the titular getaway driver, played by Elgort, who gets mixed up with the wrong crowd. The film’s cast also features Lily James, Eiza González, Jon Hamm, Jon Bernthal, and Jamie Foxx. Baby Driver is now sitting at a “certified fresh” 92% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “Stylish, exciting, and fueled by a killer soundtrack, Baby Driver hits the road and it’s gone — proving fast-paced action movies can be smartly written without sacrificing thrills.” The movie earned particular praise for its editing, which was timed rhythmically to match the soundtrack.

Edgar Wright Made ‘Baby Driver’ After Quitting ‘Ant-Man’

Produced on a reported budget of $34 million, Baby Driver earned around $230 million at the global box office. Audiences welcomed it as the absolute right thing for Wright to do — after he quit Marvel’s Ant-Man at the last moment because he felt he wouldn’t be given the freedom he needed to make the film. He followed up Baby Driver with another original movie, the psychological horror Last Night in Soho, which underperformed at the box office. The Running Man, based on a book by Stephen King, opened to mixed reviews, and has so far made around $65 million globally against a reported budget of $110 million, the largest of Wright’s career.

You can check The Running Man out in theaters, but remember, you have only until January 1 to watch Baby Driver on Netflix. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
