Only Murders in the Building has been airing on Hulu for four seasons, and one of the show’s stars has discussed the future of the show. Only Murders in the Building is a comedy-mystery show created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman. The show stars Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as three neighbors who bond over a series of murders in their NYC apartment building.
Only Murders in the Building currently holds a 97% fresh critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, and an audience score of 90%, making the show an all-around hit. Only Murders in the Building has been renewed for a fifth season, which is set to be released on September 9, 2025.
During an exclusive interview with Variety, Short hinted at the possibility that Only Murders in the Building will be ending after its fifth season. However, Short didn’t outright say the show was ending, but stated that he’s surprised the show is still going into season 5, and also said that he doesn’t feel as though shows made for streaming platforms air for a lengthy amount of time. Check out Short’s comments below:
“I think that the reality is, you know when it feels like it’s past its time. I think everyone’s amazed that it’s gone this long. This is a long time in streaming to go five years. ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’ ended after five years, because one of the reasons was that they were afraid of losing the quality of it. But then, ‘Friends’ went how long, and they were always brilliant.”
What This Means For Only Murders In The Building
No plans have been fully announced for Only Murders in the Building beyond season 5, so things could go either way. Ratings for the quirky comedy series are high, so renewing the show would make perfect sense. However, Short’s comments indicate that he expects the show to end.
Only Murders in the Building first premiered on Hulu on August 31, 2021.
Even if Short thinks the show will be coming to a close at the end of the latest season, he could totally be proven wrong. Short stated that streaming shows don’t last very long, but Netflix series like Grace and Frankie and Orange is the New Black ran for seven seasons, indicating that Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building could last just as long as those classics.
Our Take On The Future Of Only Murders In The Building
Only Murders in the Building is a fun and suspenseful show that perfectly blends humor with thrills, and is one of Hulu’s best original comedies. Therefore, there is no reason this must-watch series on Hulu should rush to the finish line. It could be completely valid for the show to have several more seasons, since the story seems to have more to it.
If the writers can keep coming up with new storylines for the show, or add a perfect addition to the show, then there’s no reason that Only Murders in the Building shouldn’t last longer than season 5. Based on the reactions from both critics and audiences alike, it feels likely that Only Murders in the Building won’t be ending anytime soon, even after Short’s comments.
