Academy Award nominee Paul Giamatti’s favorite Star Trek villains bode very well for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy premieres with two episodes on January 15, 2026, on Paramount+.
Paul Giamatti plays Nus Braka, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1’s recurring villain. Braka is half-Klingon and half-Tellarite, a unique cocktail of two classic Star Trek aliens who have been both adversaries and allies of the United Federation of Planets since Star Trek: The Original Series.
An Emmy winner and Oscar-caliber, A-list movie star, Paul Giamatti is a lifelong Star Trek fan who always wanted to play a Klingon. Star Trek: Strarfleet Academy fulfilled Giamatti’s dream and allowed him the freedom to play Nus Braka as “very aggressive” like a Klingon but also argumentative like a Tellarite.
Paul Giamatti’s Favorite Star Trek Villains Bode Well For Nus Braka In Starfleet Academy
To create Nus Braka in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Paul Giamatti told TrekBrasil at CCXP (interview presented in English by TrekMovie) that he drew inspiration from some of the greatest Star Trek villains. Giamatti’s list of heavies is, indeed, some of the best of the worst in Star Trek history. Giamatti explains:
I think I probably had in my head a lot of different villains. I probably had some Khan. I had sort of Chang and Gul Dukat, these kind of guys who love the sound of their own voices. These guys who love to kind of ‘blah blah blah,’ just bulls—ing, constantly. I thought of the chaoticness of Q and stuff like that.
Paul Giamatti introduced a new 4-minute Star Trek: Starfleet Academy clip at CCXP that showcases Nus Braka and the elements Giamatti drew from his favorite, top-tier Star Trek villains.
Nus Braka indeed has the self-satisfied locquaciousness of Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban) from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and General Chang (Christopher Plummer) from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
Braka also seems as fixated on Captain Nahla Ake (Academy Award winner Holly Hunter) the way Q (John de Lancie) was with Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart).
The most interesting villain Paul Giamatti was influenced by is Gul Dukat.
The most interesting villain Paul Giamatti was influenced by is Gul Dukat (Marc Alaimo), however. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine‘s Cardassian big bad is perhaps Star Trek‘s most underrated super villain. Dukat was a malignant narcissist and an irredeemable monster, yet he also had a magnetic charm, charisma, and gift of gab that made him endlessly compelling.
Paul Giamatti named Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as his favorite Star Trek series. This shows the Emmy winner not only has excellent taste, but also hints that Nus Braka will have layers of depth and complexity, and the Klingon/Tellarite hybrid isn’t just a one-dimensional, scenery-chewing heel.
What We Know About Paul Giamatti’s Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Villain
With Paul Giamatti playing him, Nus Braka has the potential to rank among the same list of greatest Star Trek villains Giamatti was inspired by. The half-Klingon/half-Tellarite is the leader of the Vanrari Rai, a cadre of “pirates” feuding with the resurgent United Federation of Planets in the late 32nd century.
Paul Giamatti’s Nus Braka also has a history with Captain Nahla Ake, having been imprisoned by the Federation 15 years before Star Trek: Starfleet Academy begins. This incident also ties into what happens to the mother of Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta), played by Tatiana Maslany. Perhaps because of Braka’s doing, Caleb and his mother were separated when he was a boy.
As seen in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s trailer, Captain Ake recruits Caleb Mir into Starfleet Academy with the promise of finding his mother.
As Paul Giamatti told TrekBrasil about Nus Braka’s backstory and motivations, the Klingon/Tellarite hybrid has bizarre mother issues that tie to Captain Ake, who is a 420-year-old half-Lanthanite. Nus also resents Caleb Mir and Starfleet Academy’s cadets out of jealousy, which drives Braka to destroy them.
Nus Braka is only a recurring villain, and it’s not clear how many Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1 episodes Paul Giamatti appears in. However, given the Emmy winner’s Star Trek influences and pedigree, Nus Braka promises to be unforgettable in every moment he’s on-screen.
