Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Peacemaker season 2, episode 5Just two months after the release of James Gunn’s Superman, a major foe from the DCU’s first movie has returned (in the weirdest way). In Superman, Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor used several different means and agents against the Man of Steel in an effort to kill the Kryptonian hero once and for all. Now, one of Luthor’s biggest living weapons has returned in Peacemaker season 2.
In many ways, Peacemaker season 2 is a wild epilogue to Superman. This is especially true with Chris Smith’s discovery of an alternate reality accessed via a pocket universe (not unlike Luthor’s). After Smith decides he prefers this other reality, Peacemaker season 2, episode 5 ends with the return of a major Superman foe (opening up some intriguing questions).
Peacemaker Season 2, Episode 5 Brings Back Superman’s Massive Kaiju Monster
Some compelling theories point to a dark, hidden truth about Peacemaker season 2’s alternate reality. However, Chris Smith currently sees nothing wrong with it, believing he was meant for this seemingly better dimension where he’s a beloved hero alongside his loving father and still-living brother, and a romance with Emilia Harcourt.
Because this other reality has everything Peacemaker’s ever wanted (and lost), it shouldn’t come as a surprise when Chris leaves the main DCU behind in favor of a permanent move to this alt-DCU at the end of Peacemaker season 2, episode 5.
However, what is surprising is the first major threat Peacemaker’s family fights at the episode’s end: the kaiju from James Gunn’s Superman.
Shown on television with Chris returning to ARGUS covered in guts, the kaiju taken down by The Top Trio looks exactly like Superman’s kaiju that Lex Luthor unleashed on Metropolis to keep Superman distracted while Luthor broke into the Fortress of Solitude with Ultraman and The Engineer.
As such, this alternate-dimension kaiju is certainly one of Peacemaker season 2’s biggest references to Superman yet (quite literally).
This New Superman Tie Is Cool (But Now I’ve Got Some Kaiju-Sized Questions)
Now, the door is open for some pretty interesting questions. Did this kaiju also originate from an alternate-universe version of Lex Luthor? Does this alt-reality not have a Justice Gang or Superman who could have taken the kaiju down like in the main DCU?
An absence of an alien hero would track with the predominant theory that Peacemaker’s alternate DC universe is actually Earth-X, a reality where the Nazis won WWII, explaining this world’s current lack of any other races beyond white people. One can imagine that aliens would be just as persecuted as anyone else.
At any rate, it’s more than likely that the other shoe will be dropping as we head into the final three episodes of Peacemaker season 2. It’s quite likely that the kaiju is simply the next piece of the puzzle that’s gradually coming together, revealing the truth of this alternate DCU.
