After six excellent seasons, Peaky Blinders came to a satisfying end in 2022, but the franchise is still alive and healthy after the announcement of numerous projects, and the latest one sounds like a full-blown reboot. The original series felt like lightning in a bottle, as it reached unexpected highs and cemented itself as one of the 21st century’s best shows.
While it was unclear if we’d get a follow-up, the confirmation of the Peaky Blinders movie meant Tommy Shelby’s future was secure, and it isn’t the only upcoming project set in this universe. Alongside the film, a Peaky Blinders Boston spinoff is also in the works, as well as a Polly prequel, suggesting this beloved IP will only continue to grow.
As if this release slate wasn’t exciting enough, another series has just been announced, and it’s the closest thing to a reboot we’re going to get. We’ve seen plenty of standout performances in Peaky Blinders over the years, but fresh faces appear to be the way forward for the franchise as it heads back to its roots in this exciting new show.
Peaky Blinders’ Sequel Series Has A Very Similar Premise To Season 1
With Netflix announcing yet another Peaky Blinders show, fans were naturally curious about what this one would be about, and it sounds a lot like the original series’ first season. The story will revolve around a new generation of Shelbys operating in Birmingham following the events of WWII.
Given that the original project took place in Birmingham shortly after World War 1, while the gang was just starting to build a reputation, I can’t help but get a little déjà vu. The untitled series is set to pick up after the fallout of the Peaky Blinders movie, meaning the events on the big screen could directly impact the sequel show.
Despite the crew already having a big reputation thanks to Tommy, this still feels like a bit of a reset for the franchise, which should be a good thing. Watching the Shelby family expand in Peaky Blinders‘ upcoming sequel will be a breath of fresh air, and it also makes the film even more important to the franchise’s overall narrative.
Will Cillian Murphy’s Tommy Shelby Return In Peaky Blinders’ Sequel Series?
Details about the Peaky Blinders sequel series’ cast remain unknown, but Cillian Murphy is on board as an executive producer, meaning Tommy could return. He may not be the main character anymore, but frequent cameos remain a possibility as he tries to transition into a quieter life following the aftermath of The Immortal Man.
However, despite what the movie’s title suggests, Tommy Shelby’s Peaky Blinders death is possible since the project looks to be a definitive ending for the character. Seeing one of his sons take over after his demise would subsequently make the new announcement feel like a proper reboot and explain why a new generation of Shelbys is stepping up.
Still, Tommy is such an iconic character and has escaped almost certain death more times than I can count. Therefore, if he survives in The Immortal Man, it wouldn’t be a shock to see him appear in this promising show at some point, meaning the jury is still out on Cillian Murphy’s Peaky Blinders future following his movie.
