It’s a bit of an understatement that Helldivers 2 on Xbox marks a historic shift in direction for PlayStation. The term end of an era can be an overused saying, but PlayStation putting its first wholly owned IP on Xbox truly is the end of an era. MLB: The Show is a licensed game utilizing Major League Baseball’s intellectual property, and Death Stranding is now 100% owned by Kojima Productions.
Helldivers is a fully owned PlayStation IP, making its debut on Xbox an incredibly historic event. Not only did Helldivers 2 release on Xbox, but its Xbox launch has been a great success in all regards, making it likely that more PlayStation exclusives will arrive on the green-tinted brand. Instead of another multiplayer game or a B-tier-level title, Sony should rip the band-aid off immediately and release The Last of Us on Xbox.
The Last Of Us Would Be Perfect For Xbox
A Huge Global Franchise Like This Needs To Be Everywhere
While The Last of Us isn’t historically the biggest PlayStation franchise in terms of raw sales, I would say that it is the biggest franchise currently, when factoring in its reach outside of gaming. HBO’s The Last of Us has been one of the biggest television shows of the past couple of years. Although Season 2 received a polarizing fan reception, it was still a big hit on the network, with a third season on the way.
For such a globally recognizable brand, known to even non-gamers, series like this need to be available on all platforms. Xbox would be perfect for The Last of Us Parts 1 and 2. The thing about PlayStation exclusives is that sometimes they really can’t be on other platforms.
The DualSense controller boasts fantastic features that certain games, such as Astro Bot, fully utilize. Games like that can’t really go to Xbox, Switch, or even PC. However, The Last of Us isn’t one of them. The Last of Us 1 and 2 could easily be ported to Xbox, with only the flashlight feature requiring modification.
Both The Last of Us games are already available on PC, and with Part 2 Remastered featuring extensive content, including numerous modes and characters, a combo pack release would fit like a glove on Xbox. Many fans of the TV show, who game on Xbox, would love to have these titles available on their preferred platform of choice.
Helldivers 2 Marked The End Of An Era
You Might As Well Go All The Way Right Now
Let’s face it, virtually all PlayStation exclusives will come over to Xbox at some point, just like what Xbox is doing right now. Helldivers 2 opened the floodgates, and with player counts surging due to the Xbox release, reaching 500,000 concurrent players for the first time, this trend isn’t stopping.
The signs were already there when, after Helldivers 2 was announced on Xbox, a PlayStation job listing opened up detailing a commercial strategy for PlayStation Studios titles across all platforms. Games like Spider-Man, The Last of Us, and God of War will inevitably come to Xbox, as it benefits Sony’s bottom line.
PlayStation might as well rip the band-aid off for PS fans right now by releasing its biggest game on Xbox. It shouldn’t go the Xbox route, where they released smaller titles on other platforms first, before releasing Forza and Gears on PlayStation. Gamers are smart; they know what’s going to happen. PlayStation releasing The Last of Us on Xbox next is what’s best for business, especially leading up to Season 3 of the TV show.
