Peter Sarsgaard Isn't Returning For Hit Crime Drama’s Season 2, But His Role In A New Apple TV+ Sci-fi Show Is Even More Exciting

Peter Sarsgaard is not reprising his role in a hit crime drama’s season 3, but he has been cast to play an even more exciting character in an upcoming Apple TV+ sci-fi show. Best known for playing antagonistic roles in movies and television shows, Peter Sarsgaard has been active as an actor for almost three decades.

He has over 70 acting credits under his belt, with his most prominent roles being in movies like Shattered Glass, Memory, and Blue Jasmine. Just recently, Sarsgaard also appeared in an Apple TV+ crime drama, which went on to earn positive reviews from critics and even performed well enough to get renewed for another season.

Unfortunately, despite its renewal, the hit series is seemingly not marking Peter Sarsgaard’s return. The actor, instead, has been cast to play a completely different role in an Apple TV+ sci-fi show, making his collaboration with the streamer even more interesting.

After His Presumed Innocent Departure, Peter Sarsgaard Has Been Cast In Apple TV+’s Neuromancer

Peter Sarsgaard Never Wanted To Return For Presumed Innocent Season 2

Peter Sarsgaard played Tommy Molto in Presumed Innocent season 1. The show performed incredibly well on Apple TV+, encouraging the streamer to renew it for another season. However, interestingly, instead of continuing the story beats from season 1, the show is taking the anthology route.

Presumed Innocent Season 2: Cast, Story & Everything We Know

Apple TV+’s hit legal thriller Presumed Innocent has already been renewed for a second season, but this time it will tackle a brand-new case.

Presumed Innocent season 2 is adapting Jo Murray’s Dissection of a Murder, which features a standalone crime drama story that has nothing to do with Scott Turow’s Presumed Innocent novel (the book season 1 loosely adapted). Owing to the show’s anthology approach, it seems unlikely that any of season 1’s characters will show up in season 2.

Jake Gyllenhaal, too, has been replaced by Rachel Brosnahan as the show’s lead. Since Peter Sarsgaard’s Tommy Molto was also one of the key figures in Presumed Innocent season 1’s narrative, his return, too, seems unlikely in season 2. Even before season 2’s confirmation, Sarsgaard had confirmed (via Indiewire) that he was “not interested in sequels.

While it is unfortunate that a talented actor like Peter Sarsgaard will not be a part of Presumed Innocent season 2’s roster, it is good to know that he has been cast to play John Ashpool in Apple TV+’s upcoming adaptation of Neuromancer. Neuromancer is one of Apple TV+’s most exciting upcoming sci-fi projects, and Sarsgaard seems perfect for the series.

Peter Sarsgaard’s Neuromancer Role Explained

Ashpool Is A Villain In Neuromancer

Neuromancer William Gibson Cover

In William Gibson’s original Neuromancer book, John Ashpool is not the big bad in the overarching narrative. However, he is still portrayed as the evil patriarch of the incredibly well-off and corrupted Tessier-Ashpool clan. In the book, he is represented as the downfall of the Tessier-Ashpool lineage and an allegory for stagnating aristocracy and corrupt corporate control.

Those familiar with Neuromancer would know that the book played a crucial role in giving cyberpunk a concrete identity in sci-fi, which is why it is hard not to have high expectations from the upcoming Apple TV+ sci-fi show.

Given how Peter Sarsgaard is best known for capturing morally questionable characters on the big and small screens, he seems to be the perfect casting choice for John Ashpool. Those familiar with Neuromancer would know that the book played a crucial role in giving cyberpunk a concrete identity in sci-fi, which is why it is hard not to have high expectations from the upcoming Apple TV+ sci-fi show.
