You can use your PlayStation Plus subscription to play one of Brandon Sanderson’s favorite games of all time without any extra fees right now. The legendary sci-fi and high fantasy author has made his appreciation for video games well known over the years, and openly speaks about some of his favorite titles. For example, Brandon Sanderson praised the Dark Souls franchise, citing its great world-building and lore.
While there are games that he appreciates, there are some other titles that don’t fit his lifestyle. As an author, Brandon Sanderson has stayed away from World of Warcraft, despite loving the Warcraft universe. He explains that MMORPGs aren’t a good fit for authors, mainly because of the time the genre often requires – time that is better used writing new books.
The Title Can Be Played On PS4 & PS5
One of Sanderson’s top 10 favorite games of all time, Bloodborne, can be played for free on PS Plus, via the Extra or Premium subscription tiers. Both these subscription tiers give members access to a large catalog with hundreds of games that they can play without any extra costs other than the subscription fee itself.
Because Bloodborne is a first-party title, it’s highly unlikely that it will be removed from the catalog like other games. The soulslike game, beloved by Sanderson and developed by FromSoftware, exclusively for Sony, can be played on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles. Unfortunately, the title isn’t optimized for PS5.
Brandon Sanderson Praises Bloodborne
The Author Praises The FromSoftware Game For Its Cosmic Horror Narrative
The author has openly praised Bloodborne as one of his favorite titles in a blog post on the official Brandon Sanderson website. The title is listed as his second-favorite game ever, only below Civilization 6. Sanderson explains that a lot of his love for Bloodborne, in particular, especially when compared to other soulslike games, is because of his appreciation for cosmic horror.
Bloodborne’s cosmic horror-driven narrative is what makes it stand apart from the dark fantasy titles in the other souls titles, and is exactly what makes it special. Via his post, Sanderson explains that he enjoys the game’s writing and how you, as a player, have to “construct the story like an archeologist,” citing that books cannot tell stories in this manner.
Aside from the narrative aspect, one of Brandon Sanderson’s main points of interest in souls games, in general, is the difficulty they provide, and Bloodborne follows that formula quite well. He considers soulslike titles to be difficult “but fair,” and the 2015 title is no exception to that rule.
Bloodborne is praised as one of the best PlayStation games of all time, and as a soulslike fan, it’s no surprise it reached the author. As one of my own favorite games, I urge you to play this title, which is also one of Brandon Sanderson’s top-10 games, for free on PlayStation Plus.
