PlayStation Plus As We Know It Officially Comes To An End

Earlier this week, Sony announced that it would be implementing a price hike for PlayStation Plus memberships once again, and as of 20 May, the changes have seemingly gone into effect for Essential, Premium and Extra tiers. As such, all tiers of PlayStation Plus have seen their subscription prices increased.

The bad news is that users will be expected to fork out even more money to maintain access to PS Plus’ library and monthly additions, whilst the good news is that the price hike is not too drastic, at least compared to the one implemented back in 2023. However, it is also worth remembering that, in recent months, Sony reported that PlayStation 4 games would continue to be phased out of being included in the PS Plus Essential tier in favor of focusing solely on PlayStation 5 releases. So, put simply, we are expected to pay more for less selection.

Nevertheless, the price hike has now gone into effect, so let us take a look at the changes. Firstly, the PlayStation Plus Essential tier has increased by $1, whilst both PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium have gone up by $2 per month. As mentioned, these are not drastic price increases, but an extra $1 or $2 each month does add up over the course of this year, so this is definitely something worth considering if you are a current subscriber.

Here is a more concise look at the May 2026 price increase for PlayStation Plus tiers:

PlayStation Plus Essential

  • 1 Month Subscription – $10.99 (Previously $9.99)
  • 3 Month Subscription – $27.99 (Previously $24.99)

PlayStation Plus Extra

  • 1 Month Subscription – $16.99 (Previously $14.99)
  • 3 Month Subscription – $43.99 (Previously $39.99)

PlayStation Plus Premium

  • 1 Month Subscription – $19.99 (Previously $17.99)
  • 3 Month Subscription – $54.99 (Previously $49.99)

Something worth considering is changing your monthly PS Plus subscription to an annual one as Sony is yet to increase the price of its yearly subscriptions, meaning that you are getting more for your money despite the one-off price sounding a bit daunting. As such, PS Plus Essential costs $79.99 per year, whilst PS Plus Extra and Premium cost $134.99 and $159.99 respectively. Sony will no doubt increase these prices in the future, but, for now, they will save you quite a bit of money in the long run if you wish to stay subscribed to the PlayStation service and get your hands on brand-new games each month.
