Prime Video's New Spider-Man Show Will Make Tobey Maguire Fans Happy

Spider-Noir is landing on Prime Video in May, and they’ve already revealed a surprising Tobey Maguire Spider-Man connection. Nicolas Cage is starring as Ben Reilly, a character who first appeared as a clone of Spider-Man in the comics in 1975, but Prime Video appears to have repurposed the character to stand in for the alternate-universe Peter Parker that usually takes on the role of Spider-Noir.

Cage has already played a version of this character, who was named Peter Parker, in both the first and second Sony Spider-Verse movies. While the live-action character has been altered, potentially to avoid confusion with other live-action takes on Peter Parker, such as Tom Holland’s MCU version, Spider-Noir is displaying some unusual characteristics that hark back to when Tobey Maguire was playing the friendly neighborhood web-slinger.

Spider-Noir Sees Ben Reilly Shooting Organic Webs

Prime Video dropped a new trailer for Spider-Noir, both in black and white and also in color, due to the fact that the series will be available to stream in both formats, which finally gave significant insights about which villains Spider-Noir is facing off against, and a closer look at his powers. While much of the trailer sees this seasoned detective take a beating and swinging through the city, it also reveals that Ben Reilly has the ability to shoot organic webs.

As opposed to the more common depiction of Peter Parker utilizing web cartridges and building high-tech web shooters, this 1930s iteration of the hero may have had a bigger challenge getting access to technology capable of making web shooters, but regardless, the fact that he has this ability is an exciting and welcome reveal, and one that harks back to another popular version of Spider-Man played by Tobey Maguire.

While Spider-Man has been adapted several times in live-action, Maguire’s version, as imagined and directed by Sam Raimi, was the only one to develop organic webs. Upon being bitten by a radioactive spider and discovering his enhanced abilities, Peter also began emitting webs from his wrists that he learned to use as a tool and a weapon. However, Ben Reilly may not be the only one to explore this power in 2026.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Is Also Setting Up Organic Webs

While Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has been swinging through the streets of the MCU’s New York City since 2016 with his debut in Captain America: Civil War, he has only ever been seen to have webs that he created with a special fluid compound he created. This has since been refined, but it has continued to appear in this way in every subsequent appearance of Holland’s Spider-Man.

But the latest trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day includes some scenes that heavily imply this version is about to develop organic webs of his own. With scenes where Peter is wrapped in webbing, apparently surprised at himself, and then examining his wrists, it seems that Holland’s character is evolving to have similar powers to Maguire’s version, whom he recently met in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Tobey Maguire’s take on Spider-Man revolutionized the character and made him a firm favorite for a whole new generation. Across three movies, director Sam Raimi brought his vision to life with this character facing off against some of the most iconic villains from his rogue’s gallery, and Maguire’s evolution as he faced highs and lows added whole layers of dimension to the character that have not been forgotten.

Now, as not one but two separate Spider-Man projects appear to be honoring the legacy and introducing a detail that was so significant in those 2000s movies, it feels like a wonderful way to bring these stories full circle. And while it’s just a small nod that draws a comparison between the earlier releases and Spider-Noir, it will certainly make things more interesting in the story moving forward.
