Prime Video’s new Game of Thrones replacement is dominating its streaming competition. King & Conqueror aired back in August in the UK, but it took a while for the historical series to secure distribution in America. Prime Video stepped in before the end of the year and recently made the series available to stream in its entirety on the platform, and to no one’s surprise, it has become a massive success. At the time of writing, King & Conqueror is the #6 most popular project on Prime Video in America after only a few days on the platform, and it’s poised to rise the ranks even further.
King & Conqueror is the perfect binge for Game of Thrones fans who are missing Westeros. The series is led by Game of Thrones veteran Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, famed for his performance as Jaime Lannister in the hit HBO series. He stars opposite James Norton, who has even joined the cast of the Game of Thrones spin-off, House of the Dragon, in Season 3. King & Conqueror follows Harold of Wessex and William of Normandy, who begin as friends but get locked into a fight for the English Crown. There’s palace intrigue, drama, and lots of sword fighting.
In addition to Nikolas Coster-Waldau and James Norton, King & Conqueror also stars Clémence Poésy, Emily Beecham, Jason Forbes, Oliver Masucci, Elander Moore, and Calum Sivyer. The series was written and created for television by Michael Robert Johnson, who famously wrote the script for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movie in 2009. Coster-Waldau even directed an episode of King & Conqueror, along with famous director Baltasar Kormákur.
What’s Going On in the Game of Thrones Universe?
The Game of Thrones franchise will return with two shows next year, a new series and the third season of a returning series. First up on the slate is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which takes place in between the events of House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres on January 18. Collider reported last month that HBO has plans for three seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Returning sometime over the summer is the third season of House of the Dragon. It will be the second-to-last season of the series, which has been confirmed to finish with four seasons. There are likely more Game of Thrones projects in the works that will come out in the next few years.
