Many of the greatest fantasy television series ever made, from HBO’s Game of Thrones to Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time, are based on novels. Now, author Rebecca Yarros‘ fantasy book series The Empyrean is being developed for television by Amazon Studios alongside Michael B. Jordan’s production company, Outlier Society. However, prior to any real juicy snippets of another fantastically wondrous adventure beginning to emerge, Amazon has a surprise for readers of the book series. With the release of the third book, Onyx Storm, this year, the series has enjoyed popularity on Amazon’s Kindle store throughout the year. Now, ahead of Black Friday weekend, readers will be happy to know that the special edition hardcover versions are currently part of the “Buy 2, Get 1 Free” sale at Amazon. The deal comes as part of the Wing and Claw collection, which includes Yarros’ novels — Fourth Wing (2023), Iron Flame (2023), and Onyx Storm (2025).
If you take advantage of this opportunity and stack out your bookshelf with all three of the Wing and Claw editions in the Empyrean series, you save an additional $21 on top of the already discounted prices. This means the entire hardcover collection will sell for only $49 USD while this offer lasts. Yarros’ Empyrean influence has been growing since the first book was released in 2023. Within the same year, Amazon acquired the rights to the books in a heated auction prior to the WGA strike.
The stakes are pretty high for what transpires within the pages of Yarros’ novel series. Readers are welcomed and admitted to the world of Basgiath War College. Here, grades do not matter. Students know they have succeeded when they walk with breath in their lungs, or failed, when they are buried beneath the earth. You graduate or you die; there is no middle ground. This is the world 20-year-old protagonist, Violet Sorrengail, finds herself thrown into the fray by her powerful mother, a war general. Here, Violet has to compete and master a variety of emotions, from her complex relationship with her mother to the burning desire of young love, which she isn’t quite sure won’t be fatal. Besides the emotions, here at Basgiath War College, fire-breathing dragons aren’t the only danger. Fellow riders could be far more ruthless.
Two more books are expected to complete the book series, and with the television series poised to begin with Fourth Wing, audiences will have ample time to immerse themselves in a story that weaves together fantasy, romance, and character development perfectly. Prime Video’s adaptation of the series initially saw Moira Walley-Beckett join the creative team as its showrunner. Walley-Beckett’s list of credits is impressive, working as the creator and showrunner of Starz’s limited series Flesh and Bone, while writing and serving as co-executive producer for six years on AMC’s Breaking Bad.
However, the Anne With an E creator departed the role in July, with Meredith Averill, co-creator of Locke & Key and producer on Netflix’s Wednesday, stepping in as its new showrunner. When Fourth Wing finally makes it to the small screen, the fantasy series will hope to replace Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time, which was cruelly cancelled earlier this year by the streamer.
