Resurrection Season 1 Finale Faces Pressure to Deliver

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for Dexter: Resurrection episode 7.

Dexter: Resurrection, which is already being considered one of, if not the, best Dexter seasons ever made, earning a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 94%. That said, it has a major hurdle to overcome before its season 1 finale airs on September 5, 2025.

Well, that’s just it – the hurdle is the season finale, since the Dexter franchise has historically put out multiple attempts to wrap up the series, which have received contentiously divided responses from fans. Although Resurrection is likely to continue with a second season, how Dexter executes this upcoming finale will determine a lot about the franchise moving forward.

Dexter’s Finale Episodes Have Infamously Been Disappointing

Many OG Dexter fans are still grappling to come to terms with season 8’s finale, the original ending of the series. Dexter’s final kill was his sister, Debra, who was shot by season 8 villain Oliver Saxon and declared brain-dead after suffering a stroke.

Dexter dumped Debra’s body in a bay off the coast of Miami, where dozens of the Bay Harbor Butcher’s victims were discovered, before steering his iconic “Slice of Life” boat into a hurricane. Dexter survived and began living life as a lumberjack in rural Oregon.

New Blood saw Dexter change his name to Jim Lindsay and move to a small town called Iron Lake in upstate New York. After convincing his adult son, Harrison, to shoot him in that finale, all signs pointed to Dexter Morgan finally being dead until his “resurrection” in the 2025 series.

One thing must be certain in the Dexter: Resurrection season 1 finale – Dexter simply cannot die if the franchise is expected to deliver a second season. There had long been speculation that Dexter would return as Harrison’s “Dark Passenger,” but as the show has demonstrated, Harrison is not a cold-blooded killer like his father.

Dexter Hasn’t Had A Great Season Finale Episode Since Season 4

These two “series” finales left a stain on the franchise that Resurrection has remarkably lifted. That said, based on the franchise’s track record, Dexter fans have every reason to be wary of Resurrection season 1’s ability to deliver a satisfying ending, even though the show has been a masterpiece throughout its first seven episodes.

Dexter arguably hasn’t had a great season finale episode since season 4’s epic ending that resulted in Rita’s death by the hand of the Trinity Killer and Harrison being born in blood like Dexter. While Dexter seasons 5 through 7 had their high points, Dexter: Resurrection has brought the series back to its glory days, placing extra pressure on it to deliver a season 4 caliber ending.
