Resurrection Worth Watching? Skip or Binge on Paramount+

Screen Rant’s “Binge or Skip” series helps you decide what’s worth streaming each week. This time, we’re diving into Dexter: Resurrection, the serial killer thriller sensation with a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score on Paramount+. Is it really the best Dexter season ever made?

Although Dexter originally premiered on Showtime back in 2006, the TV franchise has been revived with the massive success of Dexter: Resurrection, as well as the 2024 prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, whose cancellation has sparked an uproar with longtime fans. Fortunately, the acclaim and popularity of Dexter: Resurrection have already guaranteed a second season due in 2026. All this considered, is the latest Dexter series really as good as critics and fans say it is?

Why You Should Press Play On Dexter: Resurrection

For longtime fans of Dexter, the answer is an obvious and resounding “BINGE” – and this may just be your cue for a rewatch on Paramount+ this weekend. The tricky part here is for viewers who haven’t seen Dexter at all, or maybe trailed off after its legendary fourth season, and still have a lot of catching up to do to get to Resurrection.

Dexter tends to be one of those shows that, if you like, you really like. With that in mind, some of the missteps that occur in the show’s later seasons, including two somewhat failed attempts to wrap up the franchise in the season 8 finale and in 2021’s Dexter: New Blood, are easier to overlook, knowing what’s in store with Resurrection.

If you are fully caught up on Dexter but are still on the fence, consider this – the cast in Resurrection is almost too good to believe. It combines a handful of classic characters, such as James Remar’s Harry Morgan and David Zayas’ Angel Batista, while also introducing a slate of new characters played by exceptional actors, like Peter Dinklage, Uma Thurman, Krysten Ritter, Neil Patrick Harris, Eric Stonestreet, and David Dastmalchian.

Resurrection’s premise is also highly appealing, with its revamped yet gritty New York City setting where Dexter encounters a secret club of elite serial killers. You may have felt burned by the Dexter franchise in the past, but the latest Dexter installment isn’t just a “resurrection” of the franchise – it’s redemption.

The biggest “flaw” of Dexter: Resurrection is that it is a true sequel series and shouldn’t be watched without seeing all 8 seasons of the original show, as well as New Blood. For newcomers who just want to watch a great psychological thriller series, Dexter: Resurrection does not have a simple entry point. This series was absolutely made with the original series – and longtime fans – in mind.

Dexter: Resurrection’s 9.1 IMDb score, which makes it #26 on the site’s Top 250 TV Shows of all time list, makes it tempting to dive straight in to see if it’s really better than shows like the recent Emmy winner The Pitt and classics like True Detective, Succession, and The West Wing. The show can also be quite graphic, being about a serial killer and all, so if you’re not into violent or intense scenes in your entertainment, the entire Dexter franchise won’t be a good fit.

Our Expert’s Pick: Binge it. A comeback series like Dexter: Resurrection is truly a rare achievement that should be applauded whether you’re a Dexter fan or not. In the modern age of prequel this, sequel that, and reboot everything, Dexter: Resurrection offers a blueprint on how to properly revitalize a decades-old series while still making it fresh, exciting, and on par with, if not better than, the original. Catch yourself up, endure the highs and lows of the franchise like longtime fans have for years, and be greatly rewarded by one of the best TV sequel series ever made.
