Netflix’s funniest original comedy series will be back with its newest season very soon, and we’re not talking about Nobody Wants This or A Man on the Inside — though those are both incredibly funny. Obviously, we’re talking about Running Point, the basketball comedy from Mindy Kaling and starring Kate Hudson. The highly anticipated second season premieres on Thursday, April 23.
Running Point season 2 finds Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson) basking in the glory of her successful first season as the president of the Los Angeles Waves basketball team and looking to keep the good vibes going with her follow-up season. However, her brother Cam (Justin Theroux) secretly works to unseat Isla and regain his position, which is likely where many of season 2’s guest stars come in.
Octavia Spencer, Nicole Richie, and more guest star in Running Point season 2
Before Netflix released the official Running Point season 2 trailer on March 26, Hudson’s brother Oliver Hudson let it slip on a red carpet that he will be making a guest appearance in the new season. But he’s not one of the five new guest stars revealed in the trailer. Four of these guest star come as a pleasant surprise while one was actually a matter-of-time addition.
Netflix hasn’t confirmed Oliver Hudson’s guest appearance in the new season just yet, but we now know that Running Point season 2 will feature guest stars Octavia Spencer, Lisa Rinna, Nicole Richie, Scott Speedman, and Ike Barinholtz. Check out their teasers in the trailer below!
As one of the creators, writers, and showrunners, Ike Barinholtz dropping in isn’t surprising. Additionally, Hudson previously worked with Academy Award-winner Octavia Spencer in the second season of the Apple TV crime drama series Truth Be Told, and the actress has been known to be friends with Nicole Richie. (After all, they are around the same age and both grew up in Los Angeles!)
Based on the captions of the photos included below, Barinholtz will be playing Cousin Bennie, who’s likely a wild relative of the Gordon family that will stir up some chaos. Spencer places a character named Diane Robicheaux, while Nicole Richie plays Nicole Vark. Each of their grins in their respective teaser photos seem as though they will be individually giving Isla a run for her money.
The trailer reveals that Lisa Rinna will be playing herself and is filming something in Sandy (Drew Tarver) and Charlie’s (Scott Evans) house. She’s going to land some big laughs with her even bigger personality and Real Housewives lore. But the one real mystery of the four surprising new guest stars is Scott Speedman, who’s currently recurring in Grey’s Anatomy and starring in RJ Decker.
In his teaser photo, his character Luke McShay stands in front of Isla with his hands on his hips and smile on his face. Isla’s expression appears to be one of playful irritation, and in the distance behind them, Ali (Brenda Song) looks shocked. Who is Luke to Isla?
Aside from the guest stars that were revealed in the trailer, Running Point season 2 also features recurring guest stars, some of whom are new and others that are returning: Ray Romano, Max Greenfield, Jay Ellis, Roberto Sanchez, Jon Glaser, Scott Evans, Rob Huebel, Marissa Reyes, Blake Anderson, Ken Marino, Tommy Dewey, Richa Moorjani, Aliyah Turner, and Jake Picking.
We can’t wait to see what each and every one of these guest stars brings to the new episodes when season 2 premieres on April 23. Get another first-look at the new guest stars with the photos below!
