There aren’t many bigger stars in entertainment these days than Sabrina Carpenter, which is why her fans should check out her hidden gem movie on Prime Video. Carpenter is obviously famous for her pop music, but she also has a specific brand of comedy that allows her to stand out.
The humor is why Carpenter is an ideal choice to star in The Muppet Show revival. However, some of her past roles on the big and small screens have seen her do something totally different. One of those films starring Carpenter is a Prime Video original and it’s severely underrated.
Emergency Is One Of Prime’s Most Underrated Originals
That hidden gem on Prime Video is Emergency, released in 2022. The movie made waves when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival before it received its streaming debut on May 20, 2022, making it Sabrina Carpenter’s most recent movie role. It’s also one of her least well-known.
Emergency follows a trio of college students who find the unconscious body of a girl named Emma in their dorm and weigh the pros and cons of calling the police. Two of the guys are Black and the other is Hispanic, giving them a distrust of the police, especially in a situation where a white girl is seemingly the victim.
The film focuses on their actions throughout the night, where they try to avoid trouble, protect the girl, and hopefully do the right thing. It’s a complicated situation that makes for a great movie. Emergency was well-received by critics, including scoring several award nominations.
Emergency was up for Best First Screenplay at the Independent Film Awards, while director Carey Williams was also up for Outstanding Independent Film and Outstanding Emerging Director at the Black Reel Awards. It also holds a stellar 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Sabrina Carpenter’s Performance Is Different For Her
As noted, most people think of hilarious, often raunchy jokes when it comes to Sabrina Carpenter. She has done great work as the host of Saturday Night Live and with her funny music videos. However, her role in Emergency marks something pretty out of the box for Carpenter.
In the film, Carpenter portrays Maddy, Emma’s friend who spends the night frantically searching for her. While her attempts to help her friend are admirable, Maddy plays into stereotypes and even after learning the truth about the guys, remains skeptical of them due to the color of their skin.
Sabrina Carpenter is a remarkably likable person, so it’s interesting to watch her play someone we don’t want to root for. It shows her range and lets us know that with more roles in the future, her versatility can truly shine.
