Say Goodbye to 'Elsbeth's Best Relationship in the Worst Way Possible

Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for Season 3, Episode 3 of ElsbethSeason 3 of CBS’ hit series Elsbeth recently aired its third episode, and it feels like everything changed for the worse. As we know and love, Elsbeth (Carrie Preston) is a strong, quirky, independent female character who has a beau by the name of Angus (Ioan Gruffudd), a Scotsman introduced in Season 2’s “Tiny Town.” Well, she used to have a beau, as we see in Episode 3 that the wonderful couple “Angsbeth” is no longer. Elsbeth and Angus were a match made in heaven, so how could this have happened?

Elsbeth first meets Angus during the events of “Tiny Town,” the eleventh episode of Elsbeth Season 2. In it, Angus witnesses a murder in his hometown of Tattersall, Scotland. Not a murder in Tattersall, but rather one that happens in New York, via the Iris, a 24/7 livestream installation where people in New York can see, but not hear, what’s happening in Tattersall, and vice versa. When Elsbeth and Kaya (Carra Patterson) come to investigate, they’re frustrated to learn there are no witnesses, despite the death occurring in the light of day. Elsbeth posits, however, that maybe someone in Scotland saw something through the Iris. She lifts the veil covering the Iris and sees Angus on the other side. Right from the start, there’s a connection, ensuing in a flirtatious meet-cute that’s simply adorable.

They converse over the phone about the investigation and what Angus witnessed, but as the episode continues, the shop talk gives way to a more personal, intimate connection. Elsbeth is smitten, and gets lost in Angus’ music at home, having downloaded the musician’s songs. But the investigation eventually comes to an end, with Elsbeth being all Elsbethy and figuring out who the killer is, narrowly avoiding a violent end herself in the process. There’s no professional reason for staying in contact with Angus, and, worse, he’s no longer on the Tattersall side of the Iris. But disappointment turns to elation when Angus, who has flown to New York, appears and starts playing his song for her. They kiss, and Angus, in a nod to a funny recurring gag, reveals that being a musician isn’t his day job, but being a firefighter is.

‘Elsbeth’s Season 3 Episode “Good Grief” Reveals the Devastating Truth About Angus

“Tiny Town” marked Angus’ one — and now sadly, only — appearance on Elsbeth, but he would continue to be referenced now and again, largely in conversations with her son, Teddy (Ben Levi Ross), and Kaya. Most memorably, Elsbeth reminisces about Angus during a jailhouse chat about romance in the Season 2 finale “Ramen Holiday,” where it’s also implied that Elsbeth may be heading on a trip to Scotland to see Angus.

Then in the Season 3 premiere “Yes, And…,” it’s revealed that Elsbeth did, indeed, visit Scotland and has returned with a bounty of souvenirs for her friends and coworkers. The only thing is that she’s back earlier than expected. She’s reluctant to call Angus her boyfriend, claiming she’s not sure what to call what they have, and is dodgy when asked by Teddy about it. Surely there was nothing to worry about though, right? Preston herself acknowledged that the reality of a long-distance relationship may be weighing on them, but showrunner Jonathan Tolin teased a promising future for the couple, and if you can’t trust the word of a Hollywood executive, who can you trust?

During the events of Elsbeth‘s most recent episode, “Good Grief,” Elsbeth comes clean about the relationship to Kaya, appearing for the first time since Season 2, saying:

“I visited him in Scotland… I missed New York, and people, and action. … He misses his friends and family too, and it’s the only place he’s ever lived. Ultimately, neither of us was willing to compromise, and that told us all we needed to know.”

So yes, it’s over. What makes things even worse is that he would’ve been a great recurring character. Elsbeth continues by saying, “I don’t need a man to be happy,” but, darn it, we wanted Angus and Elsbeth together, forever, and never to part. Let’s hope that, should Elsbeth have a new love interest, they are just as good as, if not better than, Angus.
