It’s been just over a year since Solo Leveling: Ragnarok’s webtoon dropped, and it’s safe to say the series is everything fans wanted from a Solo Leveling sequel and more. Even though Sung Jinwoo himself has stepped down, Ragnarok has managed to keep fans hooked with a fresh new story and an all-new protagonist with powers uniquely his own.
So far, Solo Leveling: Ragnarok has been perfectly balancing the new with the old, keeping that sense of familiarity and nostalgia intact while also keeping things new and refreshing. That said, nothing better encapsulates this than Sung Suho’s abilities and fighting style, and his newest power is even one that Jinwoo doesn’t have.
Sung Suho’s New Shadow Creation Powers, Explained
At the end of season 1 of Solo Leveling: Ragnarok, Suho was revealed to have unlocked a new skill called Shadow Creation as one of the rewards from the Job Change Quest. Unlike Shadow Manipulation, which is naturally unlocked when Shadow Extraction reaches level two, Shadow Creation, like its name implies, allows Suho to create items using shadow soldiers.
These items cannot be turned back into soldiers; they not only have grades, but can also be leveled up and confer skills onto their user. As Beru notes in chapter #47, not even Jinwoo could manipulate shadows to this extent.
At most, Jinwoo has transformed shadows into armor using Shadow Manipulation, and though he did not use them in battle as often, Jinwoo also possesses the ability to create shadow-infused weapons like Suho did earlier on in Ragnarok. However, Shadow Creation truly takes it a step further, and it’s truly incomparable to anything fans have ever seen from Jinwoo before.
Solo Leveling: Ragnarok Reveals the True Power of Suho’s Shadow Creation
That said, season 2 of Solo Leveling: Ragnarok has proved that there’s much more to Suho’s unique little ability than meets the eye. Using another job-specific skill called Shadow Contract, shadow items that are of heroic grade or higher can be named, which increases their stats by 30 percent. Naming an item also binds it to its first wearer after being named, and it subsequently cannot be equipped by anyone else other than Suho, the creator.
However, this trade-off is more than worth it, as beyond the 30 percent buff, invoking this contract also allows the item to be leveled up. Furthermore, as the item levels up, its wearer gradually gains the stats of the shadow soldier that was turned into the item, be it an S-rank hunter or a powerful magic beast.
This contract ability is what truly makes Shadow Creation broken beyond any of Jinwoo’s skills. Chapter #62 of Solo Leveling: Ragnarok even confirms that this shadow contract can be invoked by other hunters, as seen with Baek Yoonho equipping the newly named Baekgu gauntlets.
It’s near-impossible to picture how powerful Suho could be with multiple fully-leveled heroic-grade shadow items.
This all but confirms that Solo Leveling’s S-rank hunters are finally getting a much-needed power-up in Ragnarok, giving Suho a host of very powerful allies to fend off the Itarim and their apostles. All that said, it’s near-impossible to picture how powerful Suho could be with multiple fully-leveled heroic-grade shadow items.
It’s an exciting prospect of Solo Leveling: Ragnarok, Suho’s unique gifts setting him apart from his father while remaining familiar. Considering the way the story’s going so far, it might not be too long until the day comes where he can show fans his true power.
