Steve-O in Jackass The Movie

Jackass star Steve-O reflects on a famous stunt from the original movie that he refused to perform, and how that made the movie even better.

Steve-O recalls a stunt from the original Jackass movie that he refused to do. Jackass premiered as a television show in 2000 on MTV. Created by Jeff Tremaine, Spike Jonze, and star Johnny Knoxville, the guerilla-style show followed a group of skaters, “stuntmen,” and other of figures of the early-aughts underground scene as they filmed daring pranks and stunts often involving public humiliation or bodily harm. The show ran for three short seasons, but spawned numerous film adaptations, as well as television spinoffs like Wildboyz and Viva La Bam.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

One of the more legendary members of the original Jackass crew was Steve-O. After getting his start performing in flea market circuses, he was discovered by Tremaine after the Jackass co-creator received numerous video submissions from him depicting his homegrown stunts. Steve-O’s fame has since transcended the Jackass franchise. His public struggle with substance abuse was chronicled in the MTV show Steve-O: Demise and Rise, and he enjoyed guest stints on reality programs like Dancing with the Stars and the British dating show Love Island. He also starred in a short-lived USA series titled Dr. Steve-O.

In an interview with Yahoo promoting his recent memoir A Hard Kick in the Nuts, Steve-O recalls the one stunt he refused to do was the famous “Toy Car Up the Butt” stunt from the original Jackass movie. The sequence involved pranking a proctologist by inserting a lubricated toy car up one’s butt and asking the doctor for x-rays. The stunt was eventually performed by the late Ryan Dunn, who died in a car accident in 2011:

I got all this great footage backing out of it. And the way it played out for Ryan [Dunn], there was nothing that could be changed to make it any better. That was the most iconic, incredible thing we ever filmed.

Other Stunts The Jackass Actors Refused To Do

The “Toy Car Up the Butt” stunt wasn’t the only stunt Jackass actors refused to perform. In a previous interview, Steve-O recounted how they once planned to put the cast in an bounce house and send it over a ski jump ramp, but realizing that the generator keeping the structure inflated would be right behind them, they decided it was too dangerous to attempt. Knoxville has also said Steve-O flat out refuses to bungee jump, while he himself now tends to forego anything related to the cold.

It is somewhat surprising that Steve-O refuses to bungee jump, considering he proved he’s not afraid of heights after taping himself to a Hollywood billboard to promote a special. Cold weather for Knoxville also seems a rather mundane red-line, considering the much more dangerous hijinks he has performed, including suffering brain damage after withstanding an attack from a charging bull. But, all humans have their limits, and after all the bizarre and potentially deadly stunts of the last few decades, it makes sense that the Jackass crew’s remaining fears would lie in more everyday pitfalls.
