Once Stranger Things 5 released its first batch of episodes on Netflix on Nov. 26, we knew that tons of people would immediately start diving into the new season. It had been over three years since the last installment finished its run, so fans were brimming with anticipation and eager to reunite with the beloved Hawkins gang.
What was the result? Well, Stranger Things 5 part 1 had an extremely successful launch. It had the biggest premiere week ever for an English-language Netflix show. In addition, it managed to rack up an astonishing 59.6 million views and claimed the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s global Top 10 English TV shows list. And that’s not all! The season also made the Top 10 in every country tracked by Netflix, hitting No. 1 in 90 of them.
Additionally, Stranger Things 5 part 1 has even been consistently holding on to the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s daily Top 10 TV shows list in the U.S. since its debut. Well, that’s until now. On Dec. 3, Netflix shared its Top 10 list of the most popular shows on its platform for the day, and Stranger Things 5 part 1 was noticeably dethroned.
While this is already shocking in itself, the real twist comes in the identity of the show that claimed the top spot. Surprisingly, the sci-fi hit has lost its No. 1 position to a new Netflix series that arguably should never have been made. It’s the four-part documentary miniseries Sean Combs: The Reckoning. Sadly, Stranger Things 5 part 1 has been bumped down to the No. 2 spot.
Sean Combs: The Reckoning dethrones Stranger Things 5 part 1 on Netflix’s Top 10 list

Look, we knew Sean Combs: The Reckoning would rank somewhere on the list given what it’s about. However, few could have imagined that it would actually surpass Stranger Things 5 part 1 and claim the top spot. What’s even more wild is that the documentary miniseries just came out on Dec. 2. That means it only took a single day for Sean Combs: The Reckoning to overtake one of Netflix’s biggest, most anticipated releases of the year. It’s truly mind-blowing to think about.
But I guess when a show is about a huge celebrity who has been involved in scandal, controversy, and high-profile legal battles for years, it’s not too surprising that viewers would flock to see what it all entails. It’s just not something I personally would want to binge, given how intense, messy, and controversial the subject matter is. But clearly, I am an outlier, and millions of others couldn’t resist the pull of celebrity drama.
Hopefully, we’ll see a shift back soon, with Stranger Things 5 reclaiming its rightful spot at the top. That’s where it truly belongs!
Stranger Things 5 part 2 is slated to be released on Netflix on Dec. 25.
