We already know that Stranger Things is ending, but that doesn’t mean the universe is over. In fact, the Duffer Brothers and Netflix are far from done with the blockbuster franchise.
A spinoff series is in the works, albeit still in the very early development stages, and now Netflix has revealed that Matt and Ross Duffer will be sticking around for a long time with their new production company, fittingly called Upside Down Productions. Among some of the most interesting announcements includes news that Hilary Leavitt (Ozark, Orphan Black) will join their team and run the company.
Not only will Upside Down Productions work on the spinoff, but a Stranger Things stage play is also now in development at Netflix!
Stranger Things is getting a stage play at Netflix
We don’t know too much about the play yet, just that it will be set within the world and mythology of Stranger Things. Does that mean we could see theatrical versions of characters like Eleven, Dustin, Mike or Lucas? Dustin actor Gaten Matarazzo is actually a Broadway star already, maybe he can reprise his role on-stage!
It doesn’t sound like the play will be a musical, since that word isn’t used anywhere in the press release. But we do know that the play will be produced by multi-award-winning producers Sonia Friedman and Stephen Daldry (The Crown, Billy Elliot, The Reader). 21 Laps will serve as an associate producer.
Stranger Things is one of many popular movies and franchises to receive a theatrical treatment. Other notable projects to receive stage adaptations include Legally Blonde, Harry Potter, Carrie, Matilda, Heathers and so many more.
I wonder if Riverdale would have adapted the Stranger Things play for their season theaterical production had the show continued?
