‘Superman & Lois’ Star Offers Honest Advice to Rachel Brosnahan Ahead of 'Superman' Hitting Theaters [Exclusive]

With James Gunn’s Superman now soaring into theatres, the legacy of Lois Lane continues — this time through The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan. And while Brosnahan is putting her own stamp on the character, she’s also got the support of a fellow Daily Planet veteran: Elizabeth Tulloch, who played Lois for four seasons on Superman & Lois and helped anchor the final chapter of the Arrowverse.

In a recent interview with Collider’s Aidan Kelley, Tulloch opened up about saying goodbye to the role and passing the torch to Brosnahan. Tulloch was clear about what matters most when playing Lois: integrity, grit, and self-confidence.

“I would say the things that any Lois going forward really needs to bring to the table are her feistiness and her determination. I tried to play her in perfect, and I think the writers really helped with that… you’re seeing a more mature version of Lois Lane who can really hold her own.”

It’s a far cry from the traditional damsel-in-distress take. Tulloch’s Lois balanced investigative tenacity with emotional vulnerability, even confronting breast cancer in the show’s final season — a storyline she says resonated deeply with fans.

Has Elizabeth Tulloch Spoken to Rachel Brosnahan?

While she hasn’t seen Superman yet — that’s coming soon, with a screening packed with 40 dogs and Milk-Bone treats, she joked — Tulloch is rooting for Brosnahan’s take and for a version of Lois that reflects both strength and complexity. As for speaking directly to the new Lois Lane? Well, it hasn’t happened formally yet, but contact has been made.

“No. What I had done when we finished filming was I did an Instagram post thanking everybody who’d been involved with the show. It was a role I’d been playing on screen for six years by that point, and I just set up wishing the best to Rachel Brosnahan, kind of passing the torch. She responded, but that’s been the extent of our interaction.”

The cast of Superman & Lois have certainly made their presence felt in the run-up to Superman, too, with David Corenswet revealing Tulloch’s on-screen Clark Kent, Tyler Hoechlin, had also been in touch with him when news emerged of him taking on the role. Hoechlin, as part of an Actors of Superman panel at FanExpo Denver, revealed exactly how that came about:

“David sent me a really nice note as we were wrapping on Superman & Lois, and they were just getting going,” Hoechlin said. “It was just a really nice, classy note to reach out. I sent a note back, and it was a really nice exchange. He’s a very classy guy, really talented actor. I’m excited for them. I met Rachel a few times, too. She was very sweet. So excited for the fans to have him to grab onto.”

But just because Tulloch isn’t Lois Lane any more doesn’t mean the door is closed forever, as she explained.

“Oh, yeah. I would love that. I’ve been very publicly pro-James Gunn and Peter Safran. I know them both. I think very highly of both of them. They’re both really smart,” she enthused. “I think James Gunn is a visionary. Like I said, I’m really excited for the screening on Thursday, especially because there’s going to be 40 dogs there. It’ll be awesome. But, yeah, of course, I would be so happy to show up in the DC Extended Universe in whatever capacity they’d have me.”
