Taron Egerton’s Easy-To-Binge ‘True Detective’ Replacement Burns Out on Streaming Charts

Taron Egerton will always be known for playing Eggsy in the Kingsman franchise from Matthew Vaughn, but earlier this year, he starred in a gripping TV show that’s losing its spark on streaming charts. Egerton stars alongside Jurnee Smollett and Rafe Spall in Smoke, a true crime mystery thriller following a troubled detective and an arsonist who track down two serial arsonists. Smoke aired its Season 1 finale at the end of August, and after a few months of continued success, it now looks poised to fall off of streaming charts completely in the coming weeks.

This likely comes as a result of no Season 2 renewal for Smoke, which has been surprising to fans who watched the show. Smoke creator Denis LeHane told Collider earlier this year that he has plans for future seasons, so it’s unclear at this time what Apple TV is waiting for. The cliffhanger finale also hints at the possibility of another season to come. The show was well-liked by critics, who rated it a solid 78% on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. However, casual viewers were much harsher towards Smoke, giving it a rotten 48% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.

Immediately upon its premiere, Smoke drew comparisons to True Detective, particularly the first season of the HBO show with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. It seemed apparent that Smoke was trying to recreate the magic of True Detective, particularly by having two people with wildly different natures chase down dangerous criminals. Some fans even criticized this about the show, saying that it leaned too much into trying to be a True Detective replacement instead of trying to carve out its own path.

When Does Taron Egerton’s Next Movie Come Out?

Taron Egerton is attached to star in several upcoming projects, but none of them have firm release dates. There are whispers that he’ll reprise his role as Eggsy in a future Kingsman project, The Blue Blood, but there have been conflicting reports on whether it will happen. He is set to star alongside Charlize Theron and Eric Bana in Apex, a new action film that wrapped filming earlier this year. That film is deep in post-production at Netflix and expected to be released sometime early next year. Baltasar Kormákur is directing with a script from Jeremy Robbins.

Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage about a potential second season of Smoke, and watch the first season on Apple TV.
