With two episodes remaining in season 1, Paramount+ has confirmed the fate of Dutton Ranch season 2.
The Yellowstone sequel and spinoff series follows Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) as they start a new life in South Texas. Taylor Sheridan is an executive producer, but did not create, direct, or write the series. It was created by Chad Feehan, who also serves as the showrunner, executive producer, and he wrote the first episode, which had the biggest original series debut in Paramount+ history with 12.9 million global viewers in its first seven days.
Now, Paramount+ has announced that Dutton Ranch is returning for season 2. Along with the record-breaking streaming numbers, with 2.9 million total viewers for the two-episode debut on Paramount Network, it had the biggest series premiere on cable since 2023. It is also ranked as the #1 cable entertainment telecast for adults between the ages of 18 and 49 and for all total viewers, along with being the #1 streaming series per Nielsen’s preliminary data during the week of May 11.
In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Grant Hermanns, Finn Little and Natalie Alyn Lind, who play Carter Green and Oreana Lynn Jackson, were asked about the season 2 renewal news, whether they were expecting it, and what they’re looking forward to in the next season. Check out their comments below:
Finn Little: I think we all knew it was coming with the success of the release, and how good of a show it is. But that’s very exciting. I’m happy to get back in there and keep exploring the world.
Natalie Alyn Lind: Yeah, I just got a text from Juan Pablo, as we’re talking right now, that says, “Season 2, baby!” [Chuckles] So, I just found out a couple hours ago. I think that it’s always that thing where, in this industry, even if it’s something you love something so much, and people are so receptive to it, there’s always that small thing in the back of your head where you can never be too sure about anything. So, I feel relief, and I’m just really excited to get back and be with everybody. I’m excited for Finn to finally leave Australia again, get back to the stage, get back on cowboy time.
Jane Wiseman, Head of Originals for Paramount+, released a statement, saying that “Beth and Rip are among the most iconic duos in television history and we are thrilled to bring a whole new world to life with Dutton Ranch for our subscribers around the world. We’re also incredibly grateful to our partners, including the teams at Paramount Television Studios and 101 Studios, for bringing this new series to life with such grit, heart and authenticity.”
This sentiment was echoed by Matt Thunell, President of Paramount Television Studios: “Dutton Ranch has resonated with audiences in a powerful way, building on the legacy of beloved characters, while establishing its own identity. Thank you to our partners at Paramount+ and 101 Studios for a phenomenal first season. We look forward to bringing fans more stories from these unforgettable characters in Season Two.”
Beyond the impressive viewership, the series has had a positive reception, with an 89% critics’ score and 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. In ScreenRant‘s Dutton Ranch review, Ana Dumaraog gives it nine out of 10 stars and praises how it “is perfect for anyone who loves and misses Yellowstone, but its appeal goes beyond that. It is stripped of the more frivolous and soap opera-like storytelling tendencies of the flagship.” On IMDb, there has been consistently high episode ratings, with the worst being 7.9/10 and the best being 8.5/10 after seven episodes.
Dutton Ranch has been far better-received than the other recent Yellowstone sequel and spinoff, Marshals, which is centered on Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes). It has a 48% critics’ score and 27% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Nevertheless, Marshals is also returning for another season and enjoyed record-breaking viewership during season 1, as there continues to be a high level of interest in the Sheridan-created franchise.
Along with the aforementioned stars, Dutton Ranch‘s cast of characters includes Jai Courtney as Rob-Will Jackson, Juan Pablo Raba as Joaquin Jackson Reyes, J.R. Villareal as Azul Ramos, Marc Menchaca as Zachariah Moss, Ed Harris as Everett McKinney, and Annette Bening as Beulah Jackson.
Due to the deal he’s signed with NBCUniversal, Sheridan will be leaving Paramount after 2028, but he still has plenty of ongoing shows there in the meantime. In addition to Dutton Ranch and Marshals, The Madison, Landman, Lioness, Tulsa King, and Mayor of Kingstown all have at least one more season on the way. The Yellowstone prequel series 1944 is also in the works and filming began earlier this year for the Tulsa King spinoff Frisco King led by Samuel L. Jackson.
