The 2026 Golden Globes Highlights 1 Major Change In The Film Industry

The Golden Globes have formally announced their nominees for 2026, and it speaks to a major shift actually taking place in the industry. One of the biggest award shows in the world, the Golden Globes has an international body of voters. Despite that, many previous iterations of the event have been accused of not being diverse enough.

This year’s nominees have largely cemented the frontrunners for the award season, with the likes of One Battle After Another, Hamnet, and Sinners earning several nominations. However, one surprising highlight of the nominees is how it speaks to the growth of the industry as a whole in recent years, and how it continues to evolve.

Hollywood Is Recognizing International Hits More Than Ever

It Was Just An Accident

Of the 10 films nominated for Best Motion Picture across both the Drama and the Musical or Comedy categories, four of them are foreign-language films and five are primarily presented in the West with English subtitles. It Was Just an Accident, Sentimental Value, The Secret Agent, and No Other Choice hail from Iran, Norway, Brazil, and South Korea, respectively.

On top of that, Frankenstein comes from the mind of Mexican director Guillermo del Toro, and Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague is almost entirely filmed in French. Of the other nominees, Sinners is unabashedly proud of its global roots through an authentic portrayal of Hoodoo, while Bugonia is a direct adaptation of a 2003 South Korean film.

The film industry has been met with cries of greater diversity and a larger wealth of ideas, especially in the realm of award attention. The impact of events like #OscarsSoWhite and the #MeToo Movement drew attention to the lack of diversity in the industry’s more prestigious corners. It’s set off a lot of discussion inside and outside of the industry.

The success of foreign-language films at the Golden Globes speaks to the larger international nature of the ceremony versus something like the Academy Awards, but the other precursor awards have also been pointing to the strength of this year’s global entries to the film canon.

It Was Just an Accident earned four wins at the Gotham Awards, while The Secret Agent performed well at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards. Joachiim Trier’s Sentimental Value has earned several nominations in the acting and writing categories, and is (alongside Jafar Panahi for It Was Just an Accident) also up for Best Director.

It’s a remarkably internationally-heavy batch of nominees, either in direct production or inspiration. It’s also a solidly varied year, with the sheer variety in tonal approaches and visual styles speaking to a plethora of strong cinematic outings. International films are getting more overt attention in an industry that typically focuses on American productions.

The Golden Globe Embraces A World Of Ideas

Sentimental Value Film 4

As with any art form, film benefits from a larger variety of approaches and an interweaving of inspiration. Different types of stories, told in different types of ways, can inspire creatives in all sorts of unexpected ways. That’s why it’s always exciting when even one foreign-language film breaks through on the larger stage, let alone four.

No Other Choice, Sentimental Value, It Was Just an Accident, and The Secret Agent are all powerfully emotional films, but all of them are also fundamentally different. They’re not the only international films to strike a chord with voters this year, and continue to impress at the precursor awards (even if One Battle After Another continues to rack up wins).

The Golden Globes have faced plenty of scrutiny in the past for their selection of nominees, and they’ve followed the industry standard in moving towards a more diverse approach to the industry. Even if films from establishment studios are dominating the momentum of the award season race, it’s promising to see those efforts paying off.

The Golden Globes picks for Best Picture across two categories are all largely consistent with what has been connecting with critics and other major awards, speaking to the strength of the international category this year. While it remains to be seen if that can translate to wins in the major categories, it’s a promising development for diversity in the industry.

While One Battle After Another, Sinners, and Hamnet remain the favorites to win the big awards, the Golden Globe’s recognition of a genuinely international field of films speaks to growth in the industry’s global interest. Especially as institutions like the Golden Globes to reassert their credibility after scandals rocked the organization, it’s important to see that their focus is becoming broader.
