The Bear Jeremy Allen White as Carmen Ayo Edebiri as Sydney

Series creator Christopher Storer teases The Bear season 2’s story, including what Carmen and Sydney’s dream restaurant will look like.

Creator Christopher Storer teases The Bear season 2’s story. One of the best new shows that premiered this past year, The Bear follows former Shameless star Jeremy Allen White as Carmen Berzatto, a fictional James Beard Award-winning chef who returns to his hometown of Chicago to run his family’s sandwich shop, The Original Beef, after the death of his brother, Michael. During The Bear season 1 finale, Carmy discovers a large sum of money that his late brother left him and decides to close down The Beef to open a new and improved restaurant, “The Bear,” with Sydney (played by Ayo Edebiri) as his sous chef.

During a recent interview with Variety, Storer teases The Bear season 2’s story, suggesting that Carmy and other characters will still be dealing with the same internal conflicts as they did in season 1. The Bear season 2 also represents the opportunity to start fresh, as Carmy and Sydney have to decide what their dream restaurant will look like, which ends up presenting a lot of the same issues as before. Read what Storer said below:

Nobody’s fixed and everyone’s a work in progress. Every second counts… It really is the natural extension. The thing we talk about a lot is that winning is losing, so even though they have this new opportunity, it still creates a lot of the same problems… Season 2 really is about the opportunity to start fresh and what does that mean. What does Carmen and Sydney’s dream restaurant look like? But also at the same time, what is a dream restaurant in 2023 look like? I think that’s the thing they’re sort of battling with.

What To Expect From The Bear Season 2

Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri in The Bear season 1

Carmy and Sydney’s new restaurant will be perhaps the most important plot point carried over into The Bear season 2. Deciding what their dream restaurant looks like in the year 2023 is no easy feat, which Storer mentions, as the restaurant industry is still recovering and being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The show touches upon this issue directly in one episode when Richard (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) admits he sold cocaine in the alley behind the restaurant to keep the business alive during the pandemic, and he does so one last time to come up with the money to replace a damaged condenser.

Other than deciding what their new restaurant looks like, another important decision will be whether Sydney will get profit sharing, as Storer teases. While Carmy and Syd’s relationship appears to have been mended when she returned to the restaurant during The Bear season 1 finale, whether Sydney is Carmy’s business partner or simply a sous chef is expected to be a point of conflict during season 2. Though some fans want to see Carmy and Sydney’s relationship turn romantic, it will likely remain platonic and professional.

Based on Storer’s comments, it seems that Carmy will also still be mourning the death of his brother and dealing with his own demons in The Bear season 2. This could allow the show to bring back Jon Bernthal, who played Mikey in season 1, for additional flashbacks that add context to the character and his relationship with Carmy. The debts that Mikey owes Jimmy (Oliver Platt) could also come up again in season 2. While the new restaurant represents an opportunity to start fresh, it will inevitably result in many new and familiar conflicts when The Bear season 2 returns.
