’The Housemaid’ Has Already Doubled the Lifetime Gross of Amanda Seyfried’s Forgotten Erotic Thriller with Liam Neeson

Sydney Sweeney isn’t the only one who has benefited from the success of The Housemaid; the erotic thriller’s strong debut and subsequent performance will have a positive impact on the careers of everybody involved, including Sweeney’s more experienced co-star, Amanda Seyfried. After overtaking a couple of major past erotic thrillers at the domestic box office, The Housemaid has hit another milestone. It has generated more in under a week of release than Seyfried’s forgotten film Chloe did back in 2009. In fact, The Housemaid‘s gross stands at exactly twice as much as Chloe‘s — the movie also featured Julianne Moore and Liam Neeson alongside Seyfried. Chloe broke personal box office records for the Canadian auteur Atom Egoyan, although it still wasn’t exactly a commercial success.

The movie concluded its run with $13 million; The Housemaid‘s running domestic haul stands at $26 million. Directed by Paul Feig, who previously made the similarly pulpy A Simple Favor and Another Simple Favor — this was after his successful stint in mainstream comedy — the movie opened to mostly positive reviews and an excellent audience reception. It currently holds a “certified fresh” 76% critics’ score and a “verified hot” 92% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “A sly throwback to the lurid thrillers that used to dominate multiplexes, The Housemaid cleans up nicely thanks to its wicked sense of fun and a delightfully unnerving performance from Amanda Seyfried.”

Sydney Sweeney Needed a Win More than Amanda Seyfried

Seyfried is coming off of acclaimed performances in David Fincher‘s Mank, for which she earned an Oscar nod, and in the Hulu series The Droupout, for which she won an Emmy. Chloe remains a largely forgotten entry on her resume; the erotic thriller earned mixed reviews, and is now sitting at a 52% score on RT. Sweeney, on the other hand, had delivered four major flops in a row before The Housemaid, which has overtaken their combined domestic haul in under a week. It’s her top-grossing film since Madame Web, and will likely overtake that superhero bomb this weekend, as it duels with the holdover animated hit David and the wide expansion of Marty Supreme for the third spot. You can watch The Housemaid in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
