Before he became the Mahatma, Mohandas Gandhi’s life was filled with questions that are profoundly human — questions of identity, ambition, and the pursuit of justice. Filmmaker Hansal Mehta and producer Sameer Nair have adapted Ramachandra Guha’s acclaimed biographies Gandhi Before India and Gandhi: The Years That Changed the World into Gandhi, a series that reframes the civil rights leader’s story into one for the screen.

Led by Pratik Gandhi (no relation), the first season follows a young Gandhi in India, newly married to Kasturba (Bhamini Oza Gandhi, his real-life spouse), as he dreams of studying law abroad. In London, his worldview is broadened through friendships like that with Josiah Oldfield (Tom Felton, the Harry Potter franchise), which sets him on a path to becoming one of history’s most enduring symbols of resilience and humanitarianism.

At the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, Collider’s Steve Weintraub talks with stars Gandhi, Felton, Oza, and Oscar and Grammy-winning composer A.R. Rahman, who created the original score for the show, for their pilot of Gandhi. You can watch the conversation in the video above, indexed below.
